OK - I admit I am not mechanically inclined, and this is my first car purchase in over a decade.  We bought a 2008 Camry Solara 2 months ago.  I LOVE the car, that is not the issue.  Yesterday the check engine light came on.  My husband called the service department and told them that the light came on despite the car running just fine.  He was told to bring it in to get checked.  He brought the car in to service... Over $50.00 later they told him that the gas cap was not clicked tightly enough causing the sensor to go on.  Seriously???  You could not have told us to check that first?  A decent dealer would have comped that for someone who just spent thousands of dollars recently at their dealership.  Auto Zone and other places will check a diagnostic check engine light code for FREE!  Did you hear that?  FREE!!!  I hope Wilde understands that a happy customer may tell 1 or 2 people about you, but an unhappy customer will tell 1 or 2 hundred!!! I intend to tell thousands!

First, as dumb as it may sound, the diagnosis is correct and this is a very common problem.  However, on the long term, I highly suggest you start forming a relationship with a good independent shop in your area rather than paying price gouging rates for inferior service at a dealer.  When I say "an independent shop" I do not mean Walmart, the quick oil change place, the muffler shop, somebody who "operates out of a storage unit or somebody who attempts to fix cars at home after his/her full time job.  An independent shop is a fully equipped place, well laid out and organized and staffed with real mechanics as opposed to some kid who's last job was "manager" of the french fry section at McDonald's.  Look around and ask around.  The mechanics at these shops are usually very experienced with the owner being one of them.  Again, form a relationship with an independent shop.  You'll be very glad you did!

"Auto Zone and other places will check a diagnostic check engine light code for FREE!"

The price of service at a different location has no relevance. A merchant is not required to charge the same rate or a competitive rate as another merchant. Therefore, you were not ripped off.

If you had read the 2008 Toyota Solara Owner's Manual (page 133) you would have learned that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp indicates you should check for a loose fuel tank cap. I found a free manual online after a brief search.

"I hope Wilde understands that a happy customer may tell 1 or 2 people about you, but an unhappy customer will tell 1 or 2 hundred!!! I intend to tell thousands!"

How many of those will be informed that you were too lazy or stupid to consult the owner's manual?
