My husband and I have been renting an apartment from William Chambeau III for many years.  Recently, my husband lost his job and was unable to pay the rent in a timely manner.  A deal was made with Mr. Chambeau III to repay any back rent that may have occurred once he got another job and was again financially solvent.  At the time Mr. Chambeau III had no objection to the arrangement.  He has worked with us in the past when we have had temporary setbacks and we have always made the situation right.  But then his extremely self-centered father got involved.  The father, William Chambeau II told his son that we must be evicted and not given a chance to make this situation right.  He went on to tell Mr. Chambeau III that all that was needed to get us out was to change to locks on the door and we would have to leave.  We live in New Jersey.

This practice is what is known as illegal eviction.  Only a court officer can remove someone and then, only after a Complaint and Summons is filed in court and the ruling is in the Landlord's favor.  Based on Mr. Chambeau II's lies, his son re-rented the premises without going through the proper channels first.  My husband got a job out of state that he just started.  He left me behind believing that I would be safe and everything would be okay with the rental situation.  However, I was told on September 19th by Mr Chambeau II that I had to move out by September 30th despite the fact that there have never been any court proceedings to get me out, because he was changing the locks on October 1st.  His son is the sole owner of the property so he would have to be the one to file any complaint in court and he has been in Hawaii for approximately 6 months.

All I had was approximately 1 week's notice to find other accomodations.  I have no money because I make substantially less than my husband and was paying for all the household bills as well as trying to support him financially otherwise until he was gainfully employed again.  I have been told my many people to call the police if I am locked out, but I am completely alone here with no relatives and few friends.  Both Chambeau's, on the other hand have numerous relatives and friends who would be willing to help the father kick me out, simply because they do not know the law.  I am making this complaint because if the Chambeau's manage to get away with this, how many more victims will they do the same thing to?  I would urge anyone reading this who is thinking of doing business with these people, DON'T DO IT!  Chances are you will be screwed over just like I have been. I have nowhere to go and could easily end up on the streets because of this situation.
