Myself and my family used PODS to move from New Hampshire to Florida in April of 2015.  We paid for storage of our items at the PODS facility in New Hampshire and had the furniture delivered to our new home in Florida on July 3, 2015.  We were provided a brochure for their content insurance - which they require - and we opted to up the amount of coverage to $50,000.00 on our furniture and belongings given that they would be in storage for so long.  The cost for the insurance was an additional $119.00 per month.

The POD arrived in Florida and the minute we opened it we smelled mildew and knew their had been a leak at some point.  While we could wash all the clothes and bedding and some of the damaged items were of little or no value, a beautiful table given to us by a parent was heavily water damaged.  This is an irreplaceable table.  A very large, custom solid cherry coffee table, with beautiful hand carved etchings on the side insets, as well as a custom glass top that was made specifically for the table.  It was the most beloved piece of furniture we owned and definitely the most valuable.  It was in pristine condision so we valued the table at $850.00.

We filed a claim with PODS, sent in pictures of the damage and kept the table awaiting an adjuster.  We've moved several times before - big moves - and one of those moves had a lot of damage to a dining set and an antique mirror.  Those movers sent an adjuster out to look at the items pretty promptly and then they paid our claim.  Given that, we were sure we'd get a call that someone would come to view the table, evaluate the damage and value the table.  It never happened.  We followed up 35 days after filing the claim and they replied offering us $112.00 for the loss.  That amount is less then the monthly fee we paid for the insurance on our items!  UNIRISC, Inc. - the agent for XN Financial - explained that what we purchased - for $119.00 a month mind you - was not for replacement value but for actual value and after they applied depreciation (without viewing the table at all) they came up with $212.00 value.  Subtracting the $100.00 deductible - we get $112.00 for a beautiful table that would have been passed on to our children.

We declined the offer and have heard nothing since.  At the least, we expected an objective appraiser to view the table and provide the actual value - not have them guess what they think the actual value is based on the $850.00 we listed as current value and which they used to perform their crazy calculations as the value of the table currently.

The worst part of all of this is that we NEVER received any contract outlining these terms from PODS, XN Financial or UNIRISC, Inc.  We would never have paid for that kind of "insurance" and would have arranged for outside insurance coverage.  It is a scam and a complete ripoff of their customers.  Be sure to get different insurance from a reputable company if you use PODS.
