I posted an ad on Craigslist for a php coder. Joe Tafolla (which I am not sure that is his real name, frankly) answered the ad and showed me work to convince me he has the credentials to do the job.

He also told me he was honest, a Christian and a father. He demonstrated the right skills and had great communication to convince me to hire him. He asked for a deposit of $250 to paypal and he could do the job ASAP.

He missed his first deadline saying he had relatives visiting, kept missing deadlines, did nothing, did not answer emails, his cell phone, or skype. I finally gave him an ultimatum to answer the emails or I would file a complaint with paypal. He didn't I did and won the complaint against paypal.

Unfortunately he closed his bank account so I cannot get my money. The paypal account had the name Joey Aguilar (which should have been suspicious to me). Paypal found in my favor but there are no funds to refund to me.

I found some things on the web that have led me to believe that he has scammed several people (including the IRS, by not paying any taxes). Since there is now a police investigation pending, I cannot divulge what investigators have discovered.

People need to do better research than I did before I hired this guy. I have reason to believe that his ripoffs and tax evasion now hover in the felony category. I do fear retaliation, but I think that getting this message out is critical to try to prevent any more people from being victimized.
