Well, I seem to find myself in good company. A very genial young lady calling herself Shauna Reid came knocking on my door at about 3 this afternoon. She had a very believable story about studying communications and wanting to pay for a trip so that she could study overseas (in my case to Spain). I should have known better. She really didn't seem that intelligent to me, but I know of such overseas study programs and I decided to hear her out.

After showing me more and more brochures of mags and books, I finally decided to get a couple of subscriptions for my youngest nephew. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the cost. I knew my wife would not be happy, but I believed it to be for a laudable purpose.

After writing the check and having some misgivings, I decided to run a web check on the company. Lo and behold, I find that numerous other people have been scammed by this unscrupulous entity and all you get is a recording or voice mail when you call. Well, I called my bank right away and issued a stop payment on my check. It cost me $10, but that is a sight less than paying for the dubious subscriptions. It is indeed unfortunate that this dirt bag of a company is still in business. It is also unfortunate that the young people it employs are being shown a set of values that has no place in our society.

What a shame. Making a buck is fine but our system requires high values in order for it to work. I'll be much more careful in the future. Thanks.
