As a young boy Yagna Mutnuri featured in the dance-oriented films likeApadbhandavuduandSwathikiranam, directed by K. Viswanath. A software engineer now, Yagna now lives in Canada and runs a Kuchipudi school there. On a visit to India, Yagna performed at Ravindra Bharati last week. The dance was for pre-recorded music with support in the track by Jai Kishore Mosalikanti (nattuvangam), Kuldeep Rai (vocalist), Hariababu Balan (mridangam), Mathukumar (flute) and Bhavani Prasad (veena).Yagna chose to present on the occasion some lengthy numbers that help present the span of his imagination.Gajavadana Beduveof Purandaradasa in Hamsadhwani was both nritya and abhinaya number. What interested audience was the way Yagna presented abhinaya with fluid grace and apt foot work and abhinaya to suit the subject and its poetic appeal. It was the presentation ofMarakatamanimayafamous number of Oothukadu Venkata Subbaiyer that demanded skillful presentation and artiste Yagna brought the charm of composition and its import as well, in abhinaya. This was set in ragamalika and turns out to be the major attraction of the event. Lastly, Yagna displayed his foot work standing on a brass plate and holding plate rims with toes, and moving across the stage to rhythm set in complex jatis. Yagna proved good at it too and won appreciation from the audience.
