Hello: my name is jerome, and I purchased a big screen T.V from RentA Center, brand new. It is a Zenith Model# PV5257RK. Serial# 381-43101060. It is a 1993. Last year it went out and cost us almost three hundred dollars to repair.

NOW, THIS YEAR 2002, IT HAS WENT OUT AGAIN, WE WERE WATCHING IT WITH A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT MADE A LOUD POPPING NOISE, AND WE HAD NO PICTURE KNOW SOUND, SO WE CALLED THE REPAIR PEOPLE AGAIN.

THEY CAME AND PICKED IT UP, AND LATER TOLD US WE HAD A POWER OUTAGE, AND THEY HAD OUR SET FOR ALMOST THREE MONTHS TRYING TO LOCATE THE PART FROM ZENITH, OR SOMEONE.

THEN, they CALLED US AND SAID THAT ZENITH DID NOT CARRY ANY PARTS FOR OUR YEAR TV ANYMORE. SO, I THEN TRIED CONTACTING ZENITH MYSELF, AND THEY SAID THEY COULD'NT HELP ME.

SO NOW WE SIT HERE WITH A $4.000 DOLLAR TV SET THAT NO ONE CAN REPAIR. I HAD READ IN YOUR RIP-OFF REPORT THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD BEEN RIPPED-OFF BY SEARS ON THE SAME TV SO I WOULD JUST APPRECIATE ANY HELP THAT COULD BE GIVEN TO ME TO RESOLVE THIS BAD BUSINESS SALE SITUATION.

THEY NEVER SHOULD HAVE SOLD THE SETS IF THEY COULD'NT REPAIR THEM. PLUS IT WAS A BAD SET IN THE BEGINNING HAVING TO BE FIXED TWICE IN TWO YEARS, AT THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS A SHOT. Thank-you!

Zenith ALWAYS Had Trouble:

I am familiar with Zenith TVs. I have had older model Zenith TVs and each time they have the same problem. 7 times out of 10 they will not even power on! It is interesting that only Zenith has this problem. Other TVs do not have this problem. This means that Zenith isn't as good as other TVs. The Zenith TVs I had were made when Zenith was an American company. (And it looks like the same applies to the 1993 model in the original complaint). While Zenith helped develop radio and television, I believe there is a part in Zenith TVs which is low quality. It fails after a few years and is intentionally designed to keep the TV repair service in business. I owned 3 Zenith TVs; They all had the same problem. I was curious to see what happened to Zenith. The company was sold to LG (GoldStar). I read the reviews on newer "Zenith" TVs and am glad to know the problems have increased. It helped me decide to stay away from Zenith and LG. I recommend purchasing other TVs. Even if they are not "made in america". There are many others that are higher quality. Samsung and Sony are two examples. :)

Although i am saddened by the trouble that people here have been having obtaining parts to repair their Zenith Tvs this was not unexpected by any stretch of the Imagination.Zenith was a wholly owned and operated American Radio and Tv company for many many years with an excellent reputation for building the best audio and video products.

My dating may be off but appx 13 years ago 51% of Zenith was purchased by an overseas company by the name of Goldstar(now known as LG Electronics) Since this purchase Zenith has gone progressively downhill. The quality that used to go in before the name went on is no longer evident and the personal service Zenith used to provide also went with it.

At one point Zenith products were assembled in Mexico rather than assembled in the Us to save on labor costs. Now that it is owned by LG Electonics the quality of the design of the once famous Zenith is gone.

It is just a name now like so many of the other manufacturers that went by the wayside,Examples such as RCA now owned by Thompson Consumer Electronics a French Company.

Magnavox now owned by North American Phillips a Dutch Company.Like all companys striving to maximize profits and minimize design and production costs to stay competitive These companys design their Tvs as cheaply as possible with cheap components that can be bought by the millions at a very low cost.

Lets say for arguments sake the switching power supply in your Zenith Tv by Ohms law (A rule in calculating resistances and wattages for any electrical circuit) calls for a 100 ohm 5 watt resistor to function properly in lets say the Switched mode power supply in your Zenith Bigscreen Tv at a cost of 2 cents in million lots for a particular production run.

But lets say the buyer finds a 80 ohm resistor at 1 cent in million lots even though for the circuit to work properly requires the more expensive part they will use the wrong part just to save money in the design process.

This may lead to premature failure because of the use of incorrect parts in other circuits and a color tv has many of them. Also another sad but true fact is none of these companys want to be bothered with parts or service.

To them these items are "disposable goods" and what better way to keep you coming back to buy another tv then to say the "parts are no longer available".

The law requires manufacturers to keep parts on hand for 7 years after that you are out of luck. This is just a sign of the times.Years back it was not uncommon to find parts for tvs 15 years after the fact as it was in the tube days.. (If any are old enough to remember").

I hope this may clear up your frustration to some degree in that the retailer should not take all of the blame for what is clearly poorpy made products though they do bear some responsibility in keeping a customer happy.

HELLO; THIS MY SECOND RIP OF REPORT, I PURCHASED A BIG SCREEN T.V., FROM ZENITH IN 1943, SOMETHING I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED, I ALWAYS TRUSTED ZENITH PRODUCTS IN THE PAST YEARS, WE ARE NOW BOTH ON SOCIAL SECURITY, AND NOT MUCH MONEY, BUT THOUGHT WE DESERVED A NICE BIG T.V. IN ELDER LIFE, AS THERE IS'NT MUCH ELSE TO DO NOW DAYS BUT STAY IN OFF THE STREETS, BUT WE STARTED OFF WITH A BEAUTIFUL T.V. THAT ENEDED UP SOMETHING FROM HELL. WE ARE CONSTANTLY PUTTING OUT MORE AND MORE MONEY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. NOW EVERY TIME SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH IT WE CAN'T EVEN LOCATE THE PARTS THE ELECTRICIANS NEED TO REPAIR IT. THE ONE CO. HAS OUR BIG SCREEN RIGHT NOW AND HAS BEEN TRYING TO GET PARTS FOR OVER THREE MONTHS. HOW DO YOU SELL SOMEONE SOMETHING THAT THEY CANNOT EVEN GET REPAIRED. THAT IS VERY UNFAIR AND I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING DONE ABOUT IT. THESE T.V.'S COST A LOT OF MONEY. AND AS WE KNOW MONEY DOES NOT GROW ON TREE'S, AND THIS BEAUTIFUL CABINET IS NOT SOMETHING I CHOOSE TO SET OUT IN THE TRASH. PLEASE SOMEONE CARE ENOUGH TO HELP. THANKS cjpanther1943@msn.com
