In Feb 2003 my wife was in George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC recovering from a stroke. She was unable to navigate our AT&T calling card so she made some collect calls to our home in Virginia using her bed-side phone provided by the hospital. A single 5-minute call was $18.89. Three 5-minute calls and two 3-minute calls amounted to $86.05. These showed up on my regular Verizon phone bill.

I contacted Verizon and was told that I did not have to pay that portion of the bull but Opticom could persue it separately if they wished. I did not pay. Today, 5 months later, I was notified by Verizon that although my local Verizon phone service would remain, they would be disabling the local long distance provider access from my account until I paid the bill for Opticom. My local long distance provider is AT&T, not Opticom, but I guess Opticom has the pull to disable my AT&T service.
