This moving company lost a box of my merchandise and, after numerous phone calls, refused to reimburse me for my loss.

A moving company will NOT reimburse you for the loss of a box. You will need to consult your contract, but generally your contract calls for a valuation at $0.60 per pound. So, if your box weighed 25 pounds, you would be reimbursed $15 for the lost box. In order to collect that, you will need to file a claim with the mover - you will need to contact the mover to request the claim form. It does not matter what the value of the items in the box are/were. It only matters how much the box weighs.
Is the mover insured? Yes. However, they are not insured for each individual move. Further, they are prevented under the law from selling insurance to you, which is why there is valuation. I know it stinks, but unfortunately, that is your only recourse. Best of luck to you....
