I used to have America Online as my internet provider for my home based computer. Last June I cancelled my AOL account on line. The next month July 2006 they took the money out of my bank account and also did the same for August 2006. I finally had to close that account so they could not charge me anymore money. I tried to get an online response and was told that I had used the internet connection and of course I was using the connection to try and get them to stop billing me. I am still being sent bills for $77.00 and a collection agency is now trying to collect from me and I told them that I had cancelled the service and will not pay the bill, but they are now reporting bad credit on my credit report. Watch out for America Online.

Sandy, HOW could you use a connection that you cancelled?

Sandy, If you went back in to your AOL account in attempt to contact them, you would have had to re-open your account to do so, which means you would then owe the money. Otherwise, how could you use a connection that you previously cancelled? Think about it. All you had to do was file a dispute on the transaction with your bank. That would have done it. Also, you can go to the AOL.com homepage from ANY internet connection to contact AOL. You did not need to use the AOL connection. FYI...AOL reserves your AOL screen name for 6 months after you cancel which keeps all of your information intact. They do this intentionally. If you go back to it and attempt to log in, you are re-opening your account and charges apply. You have to accept this to continue. Which you obviously did.

They billed me in their 90 day trial period, and for 2 months after I cancelled the account. After I cancelled, I believe I lost my debit card, so I cancelled that and applied for a new one. Then they sent me a letter in the mail saying that I still owed them $51.80 and I called them up and told them I had already paid because I cancelled in June. Guy named "Mike" verified that as correct, but couldnt give any money back because he didnt have proof that I paid, so I sent him evidence, and they CALLED ME UP and tried to say I reactivated the service and they automatically cancelled it in August. Apparently saying that "under the terms of service it says that if you click on the link again within 72 hours then it reactivates it. I told them to show me where I had agreed to that, and where it was written and they refused to. They wanted to cut me $10 bucks off of that but I was like "hell no! I dont owe you nothin!" and I told him that I wasnt going to pay him until he showed me evidence that I had agreed to whatever. And he said he was going to put "refused payment" on my credit report and I told him that if he did that or took money from me then this issue was going to court and then he said "thank you have a good day" real insincere and quick and hung up on me (and this was a manager) I filed a complaint with the dept. of consumer affairs, as well. Im also going to let the credit agency know about this, too.

The same thing happened to me

The exact same thing happened to me. I contacted customer service about it and they tried to claim I used the connection. However, I argued with them about it - I couldnt have used the service because I had switched to DSL via another company. They refunded my money but again took the money from my account the next month. I called them again and the money was refunded again to my account.
