I signed up for internet services online. I checked twice to be sure I was in Clearwire's coverage zone. The internet site showed I was in their coverage zone. I live in a rural area where high-speed internet dishes are the only way of getting service.

I signed up online, and received my equipment a week or so later. When I finally opened the package (I went out of town shortly after delivery for an extended stay), I attempted to install it from the CD enclosed. The CD was like a tape recording of a meeting. No visual, only people talking. I attempted another install. Same problem.

When I contacted Customer Service to get their help, they stated I was over 30 days. I explained why it was so long. I told them about the confusing CD contents.  I also asked, to no avail, how my "trial period" could begin when I hadn't been able to sign on yet due to faulty equipment!!

They put me on hold. Then he came back on the phone and accused me of lying. He said I wasn't in their service zone. I told him I had double-checked to make sure I was, and the internet showed I was both times. He stated that they had sent me a modem for a laptop instead of a PC desktop (without informing me). Why? Because they knew I wasn't in their service zone!! I asked how I was supposed to get access to the internet on a laptop when I wasn't in their zone. He said I could take it into the city and get it!!!  Get real!

He stated I had also logged on to their service twice!!! I told him I had tried to INSTALL from the CD twice, but was never to the point of logging on, and I was trying to install it on my PC since I didn't have a working laptop at the time. I then told them the modem was still in the shrink-wrap. They accused me of lying again, refused to help me, and hung up.

I went to a nearby Clearwire store to return the equipment and make a complaint. They refused to take the equipment since it was over 30 days. Again, I explained the situation - I was in Chicago having surgery on my head. She still refused. I tried a different store a week later. They refused, so I told them they were going to take it back, but no amount of discussion led to any type of resolution.

In the meantime, I'm being billed for services I had NEVER used. I answered two telephone calls from them and told them I still had the equipment, would gladly return it to them at my expense, the modem was still in the shrink-wrap, the only thing I'd used was the CD which had a sales meeting on it, and had never used the service. I told them I was not paying a dime for service I'd never received nor used. They insisted on my paying and would not discuss any type of return. I again hung up and refused to answer the telephone again when they called.

My "account" was soon sent to collections. I responded to the collection agency by telephone, and told them all of the details. They said they would contact Clearwire. I didn't hear from them again until I was sent a notice that they were about to sue me for almost $600.00!!

I still have possession of the equipment. The modem is still in the shrink-wrap. I cannot use it because I am not in their service zone, and wouldn't use it now even if I was, and even if THEY paid ME. To add insult to injury, I am now being sued. Anyone contemplating using Clearwire... BUYER BEWARE!!! They are crooks and liars.

I am in the process of filing complaints with the BBB, Ripoff Report, the Attorney General, and telling the media my story.  At least I can stop some other poor wanna-be customer from making the same mistake I did - contacting Clearwire.

I'm glad I read your testimony, because I was about to sign up with clearwire.  Now it is apparent that they are drawing imaginary coverage maps, like Sprint, I will stay away.  Thanks for the warning.

"LET'S GET REAL HERE" in Greensboro...

I "agreed to a contract", so did they.

I "agreed to the terms of service."  Service?  What service?

"Name one place that will stop a contract after 30 days."  Sure, several... Sleep Number, Beautyrest, Quadrafire, the car dealer I just bought my car from, my company, Haan steam cleaner.... many more out there that stand behind their product.  These are a few I've patronized in the recent past that do.

You're entitled to your opinion, as am I.  BUT, I got results.

I am thrilled to say Clearwire has offered to accept the modem back since it has never been used, still in its shrinkwrap and the installation CD was defective.  They requested that I talk to their shipping department, they would send a return postage and address label, and that would pay for the return!

Thank you Ripoff Report and BBB!  I wish the dispute could have been resolved differently - without the need to file reports - but that was not my choice.  I appreciate this forum that allows all parties to state their opinions and use the internet and this website as a sort-of mediator.

Thank you Clearwire for doing what was right, and being so positive and professional about resolving the situation.

Clearwire ripped me off to. They also lied in their response to my BBB response. Can't wait to see what they say to the Oregon Attorney General's Office about taking $ out of my checking acct w/out p

I also filed a report against Clearwire (Dec 3rd, Portland, OR). with 1)  Ripoff Report; 2) BBB 3)  Oregon Attorney General's Office 4) the "do not call "registry and I am now filing a complaint with a department at ADA that handles complaints for disabled people.

I had many issues with Clearwire's service.  I could not get online 1/2 the time and my  phone service was absolutely horrible (and I won't even bother going into all of this!)

I spent so much time on the phone to get  both my phone and internet service "fixed"   Everytime they "fixed" the problem, it would last for about a week and then it would go out again and I would have to start all over again.

I finally gave up after 5 months.  I tried really hard to get them to work because I could not afford another $100.00 start up fee to switch back to comcast, of which I had never had a problem when I was with them before I switched to Clearwire.

I switched to Clearwire to "save money".  Dumb mistake, especially since I rely on the internet on a daily basis.

I called Clearwire and told them "I give up. Send me prepaid UPS stamps so that I can return your modem.  (a reuter was never supplied to me, but this is another long story that cost me an additional $50.00)  Clearwire then told me that if I "fired" them I would be "violating the contract that I had signed!".

This was absolutely the 1st time I had heard of a "contract" that I had signed!  I was absolutely flabbergasted!.  Before I became disabled I worked in the legal field so I do know a "bit about the law"....

So now  they wanted an additional $150.00 from me  for an (early termination fee).  (This was almost comical, I suppose, IF you were rich, of which I am not. I live off of social security and it is really tough!  Thank God I have family and friends that help me!

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.  Clearwire gives a good PR promotion but they absolutely do not live up to what they promise in their promotions.

BTW:  Why would you pay money to order an internet provider service that did NOT cover the area where you live.  This absolutely does not make sense.

Do not give up on BBB!  I want $500.00 refunded to me and Clearwire responded with "they were not given ample time to try to fix the problem before I cancelled".  Obviously this was a "form letter" because I called them approximately 2 to 4 times each month, which is almost about one phone call a week!

We should all get together and file a lawsuit against Clearwire.  I as happy to see that I was not the only one that had terrible service with them.  It just verifies my complaint and I will add this information onto my BBB complaint.

Keep your chin up.
