I went to Dr. Wener, an optometrist affiliated with the Sam's Club store at Getwell Road store in Memphis, for an annual eye exam on October 21, 2009 hoping to get a new lens prescription for my glasses. Half way through the exam, he said there was no point in giving me a new prescription since a cataract surgery would solve my vision problem.

He then referred me to two cataract surgery centers for an operation saying that the surgery was relatively risk free. Dr. Wener recommended a cataract surgery to me in at least one of my previous eye exams. But this time, he was adamant that I had a surgery.

Although I am 70 years old, I am still understandably reluctant to have the surgery since I can see well driving after dark and had no sign of deteriorating vision.

So on 11/13/2009 I went to see Dr. Sidney Kriger, an ophthalmologist highly recommended by my colleague, to have a second opinion.  Dr Kriger gave me a lens prescription and said I was nowhere near needing a cataract surgery.

I was relieved, but also extremely annoyed that I might have undergone an expensive surgery that is not entirely risk free had I not spent $255 getting a second opinion. I am also troubled by how many other needless cataract surgeries Dr. Wener might have recommended to his more gullible customers.

I called up the Sam's Club manager Travis Lewis (901-744-8922) on 11/17/2009 to report the incidence. He promised to call me back later the same day or the next day after he talked to Dr. Wener. I never heard from him again.

After waiting for a week without any response from Mr. Lewis, I decided that this matter is too serious to wait any longer. That is why I file this report hoping to alert other customers of this apparently unprofessional conduct on Dr. Wener's part.

Optometrists are not doctors.

Even though they like to call themselves "Dr.", they're primary job is to perform vision tests.   While they may have some training in recognizing eye disease, they are not qualified to diagnose such things, much less recommend surgery.

I always take what an optometrist says with a grain of salt.  Most have been telling me that I have glaucoma for the last 30 yrs.  This makes my opthamologist chuckle.

If an optometrist tells you about a possible problem, the next step is always to an actual opthamologist to get a valid diagnosis.
