DO NOT HIRE THESE SCUMBAGS!!!! My wife I had to schedule a move across country and were on a time crunch. I very clearly informed the sales guy Dan the exact items we would be needing transport and the time frame we needed pick up and drop off. He proceeded to quote me $2,700 for the move and stated we were in luck that they had a spot on a truck available in the time frame we needed. We made the mistake of just looking at the total ratings (which is ABSOLUTELY NOT indicative of their service) and decided to book because we were on a time crunch.

When the driver arrived, he proceeded to inform my wife that our items were not what was reported and the price doubled. (Absolutely False). We were backed into a corner and she signed because she was leaving the next day. Already in our new home, I immediately called and spoke with Nicole who agreed to give us a $300 refund which was a joke in comparison to the price increase. A week later I called to follow up on the refund and and ETA on delivery, as we were quoted 7 days from pickup to drop off.

Nicole took my info and said she would give me a call back shortly with info. Well 4 hours later I called the sales guy, Dan, to follow up. He said give him 10 minutes and he would have an answer. 30 minutes later I called him back to check in...he picked up, proceeded to call me an f'ing c@_k sucker and hang up. I immediately called customer service to express my displeasure. Adam answered and before I could even explain what had just happened, he cut me off and sternly said he was working on it.

I then asked to finish what I was trying to say and he hung up on me. Approx 15 minutes later Steven Erickson who says he is the Director of Operations calls me to try and smooth things over. He says Adam was having a bad day and apologized for it and said he would look into reprimanding the sales agent. He proceeded to commit to me to process the refund by Friday. In addition, while I was on the phone with him, the foreman from the moving company that is supposed to be delivering our stuff called and informed Steven that our load was being loaded the next day and would arrive 6 days later.

Well as you can guess it, Friday came and went without the refund. After multiple calls, finally someone calls to tell me Steven wanted her to let me know he left for the day and he would process the refund Saturday. Today is now Monday and after yet another phone call, Adam assured me the payment would be processed today. I informed Adam that our family attorney was now going to get involved and that she has 100% approval to speak on our behalf and they are to release all information she seeks.

Adam could not understand why there needed to be an attorney involved. I am positive that this company is no strangers to dealing with attorneys due to the gross neglect and overall scam jobs they consistently pull. After speaking today with the actual moving company, we found out our stuff that was picked up 13 days ago has been stored at their warehouse 35 miles from where we used to live. They are unable to give us an ETA on when our items will arrive but did quote that the window of drop off was 30-days. This is a complete joke, both of these companies need to be put out of business. DO NOT be fooled by ANY rating that is not a 1-star. After leaving a scathing review on Yelp, I was contacted by Steven Erickson asking me to remove my review and he would give me the money they already committed to giving me!!!

I did so just to get what was promised me. He then proceeds to ask me to give him a couple hours to follow up with the moving company they hired to move so he could get info on my items. Well it has been 11 days since and I have left multiple messages with him with ZERO response. Apparently this company does not care if their customer’s children are sleeping on the floor because their beds which were guaranteed to be delivered within 10 days are still not delivered 24 days later. At this point, due to the lack of communication and the fact that I do not have my stuff and no one can give me any information on where my stuff is I have to believe that my personal items and money paid has been stolen by these crooks. The service I thought I was setting up has not been executed and someone needs to be held responsible. We have our family attorney looking into everything.

Motivation Is Unimportant

It's a public website.  Now, I forgot to mention to ask your attorney to look up the Carmack Amendment.  What you'll find is that Carmack provides huge benefits to movers under the law, scam movers or not, and limits your ability to pursue them to what is in your contract.  You can't pursue them for fraud, negligence, or even deception.  The mover knows this - it's not a secret.  People think movers are just like any other company out there.  They are not, under the law.  You sort of dismissed the research as gee, I should have done it, but there was no time.  That's how the scam starts....

Now, if you go to the Search Area on this site, you can type movers, and there you will find hundreds who have been or are in the same general boat as you, some with your mover, and most who are not.  Some of them will sound incredibly similar to yours.  That isn't an accident.

As I said, best of luck to you.

Appreciate the feedback Jim, however, we have done our homework and there are legal options...I will leave it at that. We are also dealing with the actual "moving” company as well. There was no contract signed for any agreed upon compensation. I’m not looking to profit at all, just using every avenue possible to get true communication out about the practices of these companies. Yes, unfortunately situations caused us to have less time than optimum in deeply researching moving companies. Lesson learned, however, no one should have to go through what we are and countless others have. We have been in contact with quite a few families who experienced the same level of treatment that we are.

The Company Identified Isn't a Mover

I looked up the DOT number of the company you're talking about, which was provided on their website, and they are not authorized to move household goods anywhere.  Excalibur is a broker, and you don't require a broker to move housegold goods.  I also noticed they have no trucks to their name, so whoever came to pick up your items....wasn't this company.  In reality, a Broker has no responsibility to do anything once the mover that's successfully won the bid for your move...comes and picks up your stuff.  Once they do that, the broker steps away and the company who moved your items...now has responsibility.  You don't indicate what company moved you.

You can see this information based on the following:  safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx

Put the DOT number 3054918....and you'll see their only authority is that of a broker.  You'll also see the number of power units they have (usually trucks) is zero.  You can't move anyone without a truck.  I haven't done a google search on their address, but I suspect it's not a warehouse.

I don't know where you moved from or to, but moving across the country for $2,700 normally does not cover the cost of gasoline for the truck, let alone all of the labor and other costs.  So when the actual movers arrived to load your items (not Excalibur), they quickly indicated you had more stuff than you put down (doesn't matter whether it's a lie or not) on whatever form you filled out for the broker.  Part of what you paid goes to the broker, and some to the company who eventually moves you.  The mover who showed up gets out of you....gets to keep all of that.  This is a pretty old scam and this generally happens when you look for a mover on the internet instead of the yellow pages.  A new contract is in place, and whatever you agreed to with Excalibur is now null and void.

However, you have another problem to deal with that you haven't even mentioned yet, and that's going to be the condition of the items being moved when they do finally show up.  Its almost a certainty your items did not ride on an air ride trailer like a legitimate mover would have done, which means your stuff bounced around on the truck.  There will most likely be damage and according to your paperwork, any claim you file is going to be reimbursed at $0.60 per pound.  Your family attorney is not going to be able to do much about it, including a lawsuit, because you signed a contract agreeing to the reimbursement.

I'm sorry this happened.  Moving is not an inexpensive venture.  It is highly labor intensive, and there is no automation to make the job cheaper.  Often you will pay far more in terms of lost time, damaged items, and stress, than if you had simply contracted with a legit mover who is local to you (United, Bekins, Mayflower, Atlas, North American, or possibly 1-2 others) and has the resources to handle your move.  Researching moving and what to expect is a good thing to do on the internet.  Finding one on the internet, isn't....I hope things work out for you.
