On Thursday afternoon March 13 while travelling south on Granda I noticed a sign stating "9.99 a/c check" since at the time the air conditioner in my car was not working I thought it would be a good idea to get it evaluated and thought maybe a can of freon would do the job.

The attendant/manager after 'CHECKING' my system informed me that THE PROBLEM was that 3 cans were needed. At the time I only had enough cash for 2 cans and was told I could come back at a later date and add the third can. I agreed. After paying the $64.13. ($25.00 per can, $9.99 a/c check and tax)I drove off with cooler air in my car then 5 minutes down the road it stopped. I returned to the Express Lube they told me I must have (now listen to this)a leak in my system ,a clog in my system or my compressor must be damaged.

WHAT THE HECK was the 9.99 A/C CHECK for----when they checked the system they should have advised me about the condition of my A/C and then I could have made an informed decision about the freon-anyway-I recieved NO refund and no sympathy to my problem---they only suggested I maybe add another can of freon the nerve??!!I am filing suit today

just so you understand The techs at Express lube are not certified mechanics. they cannot detect leaks in any system other that the obvious. and the only check they can do is with a store bought adapter that is availlable at any auto parts store.

On your receipt, does it list everything that was done to your car? Prior to putting in Freon, it is mandatory that the service techs perform a pressure check. (And you're 100% sure it was Freon--R-12--that they used, and not R-134a? Double-check that!) When they perform the pressure test, only after verifying that the system is sound and will hold refrigerant, can they begin the flush and fill process. Adding R-12 to an obviously unsound system is a violation of the EPA regulations, so if you're filing suit, you may want to contact an attorney to see if there are any other counts that can be filed against them. If your system did quit working after five minutes, there is something seriously wrong, but I'd put my money on the shop for a few reasons. First, if it leaked out, as they said, a leak of that size would be easily found by a properly-performed pressure test. Second, if there was a clog in your system, it developed after the service was performed, and if the flush-and-fill procedure was improperly performed (or not done at all), any residue or contaminants would have just been shuffled about by the new refrigerant and oils being added. Third, if your compressor was damaged, you'd most likely have heard it fail, but in fairness to the company, how long had your a/c system been inoperative? If it was a long time, then the internal components would have been without lubrication, and they probably would have been burned up after the compressor was turned on. But with your a/c working fine then cutting out, I'd bet that leaky seals are the most likely culprit, but either way, if they're authorized to perform a/c services, they should have known what to look for and not done your service. Good luck
