Complaint Review: Family Dollar Store #5816 - West Valley City Utah

Since I began working at this store on 4-12-08 I have witnessed several accounts of verbal abuse by the assistant manager towards customers, including one I would call extreme, towards a physically and mentally challenged woman whom the assistant chased out into the parking to continue screaming at her and threatening her with calling the police. In this instance, the woman was asked to leave her backpack at the door and she did not want to do so, instead of playing the incident down and going on, the assistant started screaming abuses at her and threatening to call the police, chased her out into the parking lot where she continued and then came in and told me that woman was '86'd' and to never let her back in here. I was appalled that a member of management would treat anyone that way, much less a person who had certain challenges, I was sick to my stomach. There have been many instances where this assistant has screamed at other customers and treated them in the same fashion, the latest was Friday-June 27, 2008 when this asst. yelled at a man's children to 'get out of the toy aisle and do it now'. The kids' father told her (and you could tell he was mad) said if she had anything to say to his kids, she needed to say it to their parent, not them and then it was on, her screaming they had no parents and get out, etc. and him pacing around her drawing his fist back. He asked to speak to a manaer and she identified herself as the manager, I was shocked and worried, as in all of the instances' too numerous to recount here, I have always been afraid of the customer's retribution and because I was standing there, also getting shot. He came thru my line and got the necessary phone numbers to report her to the head office, however, I have reported each and every instance that I witnessed to my boss, the actual manager, Iwas blown off like so much fodder. I have also been told that 'no one else seems to have the complaints about her that I do and therefore they don't count for much', my God people this assistant is out of control, works with no rules, no boundaries and no company policy, I cannot believe that a company would allow their customers to be treated like this, but they do. I am so worried about retribution I finally refused to work with her, my boss panicked and then promised me she would be 'immediately transferred' out of this store. That statement was made only to get me to unload the truck which was waiting in the back. This morning, I was told this assistant would be closing the store-so much for my bosses' honesty and integrity. I refuse to work in a place where the boss is a liar and endorses this kind of behavior towards the customer and community, I live around these folks who come in and shop in this store and I just wash my hands of it. I am writing this to let others know this company does NOT give a snot about their customers or the people who work for them, just the almighty dollar. I believe that the other people who work at this store need their job to pay their bills so they do not complain, I was told yesterday by a cashier that she never complained about this asst. because she figured nothing would be done about it and she needed to eat. I am thankful I am in a position where I do not have to work and could walk out of there rather than lower myself and continue to work in this snake pit. I left out the usual lie to me about my starting pay, etc. I want folks to know that this store only wants your money and then they want to abuse you!!!
