FAMILY DOLLAR STORES UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE Benton Harbor Michigan
I managed a Family Dollar store where I was on salary. My salary was based on 48 hours, but we were required to schedule and work a minimum of 52 hours. Due to payroll restrictions I had to work a minimum of 60 or more hours just to make budget.
I was told when I took the store that if I increased sales, that my budget would increase. Well I was managing the store for about 2 and a half years increasing sales and profits the whole time, and the budget never increased to match the volume of sales I was doing.
At times I had to run a high risk store by myself for 3 to 4 hours at a time. On occasion I had to run the store all day by myself. The district manager terminated my employment because she said I only called to verify 5 refunds two weeks in a row, which she said was a violation of policy because I was supposed to call 6 every week. I know there are managers today that are not calling any.
I feel the real reason for my termination was I couldn't get the shrink down to where they wanted it. In April of 2007 I had my store inventory, the shrink was higher than they wanted so they had the Loss Prevention manager come in to interview everybody. He took out a cashier for sliding, and my assistant for a policy violation. At that time he told me he didn't think I could control the shrink, but they did not get rid of me until July 31, 2007.
At the time of my inventory my district manager had no trainees, no promotable assistants, and she had most of her stores running with only one assistant instead of two. So my feeling is she waited until she had someone
to pull into my store 3 months later then let me go for a policy violation.
