My daughter's boyfriend "J" - a very, hard-working individual - is getting the shaft from a Family Dollar store in Delaware County, PA (I do not want to identify the store at this time) where he had been an assistant manager. He was off this past weekend and called the store manager to get his schedule for the coming week (specifically, when he would have to come in on Monday).

Well, the Store Manager informs him that he is being transferred to a store in a rather undesirable location in Delaware County. The reason given is that this store that he is being transferred to has a new Store Manager and they need an experienced Assistant Store Manager to help him out. "J" is being replaced at his current store by a newly-hired assistant manager.

Well, "J" had been mugged in the city where he is being transferred to and is not going to accept the transfer. He would have to be closing the store several nights a week by himself with no security guard and he would be unloading the truck on a weekly basis with no one other than the truck driver there until the store open. Given the area that this store is in, I don't blame him as I am sure that this Family Dollar is an easy and frequent target for robberies. "J" doesn't drive and would have to take public transportation to and from work when my wife or I could not take him to work or pick him up from work.

He was asked to turn in his keys to the store that he is at and at this point, I don't think that he has given notice to them that he will not be reporting to the new store yet. "J" is in the process of putting in applications at various retail businesses in our areas and hopefully he will find something soon before he loses too much income - he's barely holding his head above water as it is.

I've been looking at a couple of forums out on the Internet where FD and other retail companies employees air their gripes (I've seen them here too) and I wanted to warn anyone who may be considering employment at Family Dollar that this is not the type of company that cares about their employees in the least.

I read your report here, working with this company it is sad that people that claim to help not only consumers, but the employees.Like all other companies are all for the money and dont care.(my opinion) hope the best for him, but i was wondering did he accept the transfer? was he offered it? because i know for a fact, a transfer can only be done if the employee wants to and if a promotion is available, but if he cant or not able to, they cannot deny his transfer choice, and they cannot ask for his keys, dollar general tried that on a great employee i had that was a third key to a asst. manager, well let say that DM is no longer with the company..... what they dont like is for an employee to stand up and face them and say no, if he could not go to that store b/c of that they have to accept that and that DM of that district has to find employees to that store, no matter what, believe me i know when you are a maanger you have that same choice to say no, and they cannot do a darn thing to you, or ask for keys, it is in the S.O.P Manual, handbook.Even though it has been time to pass since you have posted this, i saw htese reports, and working with this company, i am like these people have been lied to and even from people that claim they are still with the company, know this is wrong. But, best of Luck, and if he did promote, he is still young, all it will do is work 90-100 hrs a week, more and more thrown on him, and if you tick a dm off one time by standing up, within store standards, you will get canned... he needs a job, that is A Career, and doesnt have the most highest turn over, when you see that in a company , stay way!
