Family Dollar

Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I have been a manger at this particular Family dollar store for two years now and there have been very few weeks that I have been able to work under 60 hours per week. Due to the policies and payroll issues it is impossible for managers to fufill their management duties. We are nothing but glorified stockers with manager as our title.

For approximately nine months I ran two Family Dollar stores and worked most days in both stores. Managers receive a percentage bonus at inventory which I did not receive for the store that was not my base store which I do not feel was fair. Family Dollar does not acknowledge managers running two stores as it is not their policy to have one manager in two stores. If that's the case then why in my district alone...I personally know of at least five of us managers who have held two stores and at least one other who held two for the length of time that I did.

My district manager I used to believe he gave a crap about his managers but after what he's put me through and others has made me see what he's really all about. He's in it for himself period. I had a doctors note to be on light duty due to an ankle injury. Due to my DM's intimidating conduct and his ridiculing comments I was not permitted to adhere to the doctors orders and am now off of work completely. There's a possibility they will dock my pay because it is not a comp case and I am not fufilling my 52 mandatory hours.

I worked 81 hours last week on an ankle that had not healed because of Family Dollar policies and pressure from the DM. My salary is $549.53 per week and if you do the math...at 81 hours that worked out to be $6.78 per hour....$2 less an hour than what my assistants make....and many more hours than what my assistants are allowed to work.

I want to do something about this company's labor practices, nobody should be treated so unfairly....management or not.

I am shocked at how these people can violate Federal Labor Laws! But they will always prey upon people too ignorant of the law and too disparate to feed their families to stand up for their rights! The days of the patriarchal benevolent exploiter of human capital is over. What you have now are psychopathic YUPPIE managers who see you as the WAGE SLAVE and themselves as the MASTER! Federal labor laws go unenforced. And I have noticed that no matter WHAT the industry, it seems all the businesses in the world are engaged in this so-called race to the bottom to find how CHEAP they can pay their labor with the LEAST amount of rights for them. Even if you got an attorney and you got a settlement for all the abuse, it had better be enough so you won't have to work for the rest of your life because stores like this are good at the illegal art of BLACKLISTING people so you will NEVER work again in that industry or ANY other if they have their way. Only a class action suit or A LABOR UNION could possibly prevent some of this stuff from happening to you all. The INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS AND THE NEWS MEDIA THAT THEY OWN are pumping up the FEAR these days concerning an impending economic recession or collapse and that only serves to make people more desperate about their employment security so they are going to take what they can and all the ABUSE that goes with it and keep their mouths shut. Like i had to do for so many years. MINIMUM WAGE HELL. Since I don't see a class action suit forthcoming from a group of disorganized, frightened people ignorant of their rights, then you can only save yourself. Go the junior college and retrain for another job. You cant' blame the store for taking advantage of every opportunity to be cutthroat and undersell their competition. IF they are able to screw their employees, well, that's just another cost of doing business and if they get away with it and the Federal Government turns a blind as this Adminstration has seemingly been prone to do, and the employees are willing to be exploited, well NOTHING can be DONE!

I agree with what the other person suggested to you. They cannot argue or go or make you go against any DR NOTE, . Please make sure you have a copy of that note for your file if not go to the DR, and get the transcription report on you and your condtition. You can replace a job, but not your health. Believe me I know, I got an injury from working at Family Dollar, if this happen at Dollar General, honestly I would have got better care, especially in GA... (worker comp )In my opinion, it "sounds" like your DM is trying to get you to quit or lose your cool, and make a fool of yourself, you need to do like that guy told you earlier about the labor law, because I do know there is a BIG lawsuit going on with Dollar General about working employees(salaried managers) so many hours they worked, and the plus part was they were working them from store to store, believe me I know, I had to do it at Dollar General, and amily Dollar, believe me Next on list will be you know who. Also, speak with your DR tell them, have him give specific instructions, please whatever you do, don't refuse any duties, tell them I will do what I can do to the best of my ability, and what my (legal) DR note allows me to do, remember, don;t let them see you sweat, take care of yourself, and if need any suggestions or anything leave a message on the report board, I have worked with these two companies for over 15 years,

Why allow yourself to be bullied?? What was doctors definition of light duty?? What is Family Dollar's definition. Why not check with Dept of labor and see what your rights are?? Since you are Exempt they maybe limited but you should really go ahead and try for short term disability. Provide the doctor with info you just gave and see if he can change it to not being able to work at all since your boss doesn't seem to want to cooperate.
