On December 24th 2004, I called A Fantastic Sam's located in Louisville Ky to inquire about childrens haircut prices and the times they were closing for the day, so I could get my two young girls, ages 3 and 4 haircuts for christmas at grandmas. I was told the haircuts were $11 and they closed at 2 pm. So off we went, we got there at approximately 1:30 pm.

After waiting for a minute for someone to take our kids names, a lady came from around the sink area and asked what we wanted. I told her the girls needed a cut. She promptly told me that they were closing at 2pm and that there were other people ahead of us.

She told us we couldnt get haircuts for the girls. So needless to say we left angry.

This was the worst service we have received at any salon, ever.

I was in this particular salon many years ago, and then I moved away. But my memories of a good haircut and courteous, efficient staff remain. I stumbled across this report, and can not believe that the complaintant expected to get two kids haircuts , one half hour before closing, on Christmas eve. Her disregard for the hairstylist, as well as her lack of concern for other customers, who may have been waiting, is obnoxious.

Apparently this rudeness is becoming very common place. I have witnessed similar demands in the last few weeks at my local Post Office, and again with unreasonable demands on a waitress at a local restaurant. These people may be in a service industry job, but they are not slaves. A self centered person who demands what they want, when they want it, at all costs, is doomed for a lot of disappointment and few friends.

My apologies to all the hairdresssers, postal employees, waiters, nurses, etc. who must endure this childishness.

#4REBUTTAL Owner of company

Tue, December 28, 2004

I recently received a copy of the complaint: Worst Service Ever, This is not the way in which Fantastic Sams conducts business, I am sure that their is a logical explanation for what occurred on 12-24-04. we have been in business for over 20 years here in the Louisville area and do not condone this type of behavior towards our guest. I am quite sure that the wait in this case extended the open time for the Christmas holiday, as previously mentioned by another franchise. for goodness sakes it was Christmas Eve coupled with the unfortunate 16 inches of snow and a very limited staff did not make the situation a good one, having said this, it is our intention to satisfy our guest first and foremost,we apologize for this inconvenience to the consumer. our FS website is always available for the consumer as well as managers and General managers phone numbers posted in each and every one of our locations. We at Fantastic Sams would like the opportunity to speak personally with this customer and would be more than happy to give her children free cuts for the inconvenience. Again we at Fantastic Sams want the consumer to be aware that we are always available and ready to listen to any and all concerns that may involve our company. we value and appreciate the opportunity to service you the consumer!! I am not the owner of this company (I wasn't able to uncheck the Owner box at rebuttal) but have worked for a similar chain of salons on and off for ten years. This type of customer was very common at closing time. We would be backed up for an hour or more, and someone would walk in and want a hair service. If it was an hour until closing and we still had quite a few customers signed in, we would respectfully report that we were booked up for the day/evening, and suggest that the customer try back earlier the next day. Some people would take the suggestion well, and some would throw a fit. "You don't close until XXpm, why can't you squeeze me in?" This is why we can't squeeze you in: We close at 2pm (or 8pm/9pm) and we need to be finishing up a hair service at that time- not beginning one. We get paid no more than one half hour past closing time and some companies don't pay past the closing hour at all. If you cop an attitude, you will get nowhere fast with tired stylists (nor anyone else in the service industry). We do not try to be intentionally rude to you. You must understand that the salon has been open most of the day. It is not our fault that you have waited until the last minute for your haircut(s). We work the hours of business, and sometimes a bit more, serving customers on a first-come first-served basis. As an example, let's say you work at a grocery store. Your shift ends at 5pm. You close your line at 4:55pm and plan to ring your last few customers through and then clock out for the day. Even though you've turned off your line light, people still keep lining up. You kindly have to draw the line somewhere or you will be working until people stop getting in your line. You finally say, "I'm closed". Even those two words will tick someone off. My point here is this: People, please use some common sense. The salon employee(s) did not set out to make you mad. They simply had enough people signed in already to last them until, or past, closing time. Plan those last minute haircuts a bit earlier in the day or wait until after the holiday. Family get-togethers won't be spoiled because your kids didn't have their hair cut. Really. And if you still think that the service was so bad, then don't return to that salon. I'm guessing here, but if you threw a fit, they probably don't want you to come back either.
