I work for an agent and have heard this story many times. There are ways to help you can contact the DOI in Sacramento and file a complaint. Have all of your doc's together the DOI is there for the consumer. There is also a regional office in Pleasanton 925.847.0700 that can also help, they will let you know who cancelled the policy. If you were on a monthly billing and was behind on the payment they would have cancelled you wether you paid one month and it carried you into the next month. The second month it has to paid in full or they will cancel it, I am not saying that is the boat you were in, but that is usually the case. I hope that this works for you because if its the case something needs to be done with the employee. Another very very important law to know in the state of California you have to be licensed to transact any insurance policy, its against the law. The state of California has just bumped the fine to 50,000 and there are several other things that are done to the person and the agency. To many to list. Hope this helps.
