I found a posting with GCO LLC on indeed.com and saw an advertising company opportunity. Sent my resume via ZipRecruiter and was contacted for an interview within minutes. Literally, minutes. I was called to an interview in Bedford the next day and the interview lasted three minutes. I was asked not one question and offered the position later that day in a phone call. None of my refrences were checked. I was told that there would be three days of unpaid training about "our product" in Concord at L & R Merchandising. I arrived at L & R to find that I needed to fill out an application again and give all of my personal information again. I needed five personal refrences and they could not be professional refrences, turns out I would be forced to sell vaccuums to these people. We were told that we would all become independent dealers of Kirby Vaccuums, which was not anything to do with advertising and that is when I began to be skeptical. My goal was to sell the vacuum to 7 people over the weekend after the training, and get 100 names during the first week or I wouldn't get paid. After I discovered we would be selling Kirby Vaccuums, I left and asked for my application back. After two days of a run around, I was finally given the application back at a remote location undoubtably to prevent me from telling the other "trainees" of what I had discovered and that this was all just a pyramid scheme. I would never reccommend anyone to work at this agency or provide their personal information in such an insecure way. I am saddened that not many people will see this until after they hired by this ripoff company, a subsidiary of L & R Merchandising in Concord which has quite a lengthy ripoff report page.

I love how they have "employee: not true" listed above, notice how it says this on all of their pages (L & R Merchandising, etc). Hoping the place has been shut down or run into the ground by now. If you want a good paying sales job, sell cars not these overpriced vaccuums.

#3REBUTTAL Owner of company

Tue, May 06, 2014

In Response to the untrue statments made about my company, i would like to clear the air about how we operate. First off this individual found it odd that a company contacted him when he sent a request to be contacted by us to begin with for a job. Sorry it was to soon to get you in for an interview, next time i guess we'll wait longer to get candidates in. When being interviewed we explain exactly what one's responsibilities would be with the company and have ample time to discuss futher and ask any questions regarding the position(s). Knowing it was Kirby products IN the interview and then deciding to proceed to the training i guess raises the question...why did you come in for the training? We did in NO way have you fill out 2 applications, first one wa filled out and second was a ref. sheet which included emergency contact info (like any business does), and questions about goals you have and whats important to you. I can see how that can be seen as another "application".

The first day is an orientation where we explain how the business runs and is successful. Now this usually last for approx. 3 hours. After leaving 15 min "you" left... demanding your app back. It only took one day to get it back to you and thats because it was at the office you filled it out in..not where you were at the time! We met in a location outside of the businesses due to the fact that your a negative, disrespectful person and didnt want you to pollute others with such a negative attitude. No one ever "forced" (as you put it) you to do anything.

Both companies are accredited with the BBB and hold VERY high standards and scores. (look it up)

I've been in this business for almost 9 years and although sometimes i have to deal with those who really have no clue what their talking about trying to make me look bad, i am not as easily discouraged as i know i run a fair and just business.

Good Luck bringing that negative attitude and closemindedness to your next interview.

And remember Kirbys only been in business for 100 years and in 67 countries. Programs dont fail, people fail to follow programs.

#4UPDATE Employee

Tue, May 06, 2014

I am a current employee of GCO Advertising, LLC in Bedford and have also worked at the L&R Merchandising office in Concord. First off, I would like to say that I get paid what I am told I am going to get paid. Both business owners are very friendly and honest individuals who run their offices with ehtical guidelines. Secondly, selling 7 Kirbys in a weekend is not a requirement whatsoever, infact, selling one in an entire month is not even a requirement. The contract that is THOROUGHLY explained to furture employees and then signed states that all you have to do is show 15 potential customers the Kirby in one week to get the base pay, and if you do happen to sell one or however many you sold you get the commission, simple as that. As for the 100 references, that is not a requirement either. Getting 100 references in a week is just to get a bonus. The references are simply what keeps the 2 offices from ever having to do door-to-door marketing. Thirdly: Pyramid Scheme-

  1. a form of investment (illegal in the US and elsewhere) in which each paying participant recruits two further participants, with returns being given to early participants using money contributed by later ones.

Employees do not buy into the business and do not make money off of recruiting, Kirby has absolutely nothing to do with pyramid scheming.
