The timing belt, not to be confused with the serpentine belt, fan belt etc, is INTERNAL. The only way to inspect it is to open up the front of the engine. At 91k, which is what I thought you said was on this, it was due at least one timing belt change at 60,000. They would have no way to prove that was done unless bthe owner at 60,000 provided paperwork. But at $500 you do not know how lucky you are! If it was an interference engine, then the breaking of the belt would have caused tons of engine damage and require probable replacement. However, at $500, I question what exactly you received for your money. Seems low for a professional job. When you replace the timing belt, it is customary to also replace the water pump, tensioner(s), pulley(s) and front engine seal. All these parts become exposed when you replace that belt and it makes sense to replace them while you are there. If you did not at least replace the tensioners, chances are your new timing belt will have a short life!

2003 Jeep Wrangler, 91k miles and I did get a good deal. I used the leverage from my Honda Fit to get it down. I know and understand it was a used vehicle but my salesman lied and told me it went through a 100 point inspection before I had even pulled in the lot....I guess the timing belt must have been the 101th point. No matter what they excuse, used vehicles have problems but buying ANYTHING from a dealership that big shouldn't break down the first week of ownership.
Yes, I got the pre-sale agreement in writing and like I said, I have a voice mail of the sales manager claiming to mail me a check,...10 days ago. Still nothing.
I'm not just some pissed off idiot that is mad at a dealership, they've lied to me, treated me unfairly and even worse of all, not honored their claims they've made in writing, pre-sale.
Its very bad business.

I am figuring this is a USED vehicle. You never mentioned the Year, how many miles and how much you paid for it?
The other question is in this "Pre-Sale" agreement that they would fix anything. Did you get that in writing?
