Here is the letter we emailed to Home Depot. Unfortunately this pictures we sent them could not be included in this report.

Home Depot Management,

After extensive shopping and price comparing we recently bought carpet from your store in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. We had our room measured three times from various carpet stores prior to your store coming out. Everyone else quoted our room to be 31.5 sq. yards. Home Depot told us that the other quotes were wrong and we needed 36 to 38 sq. yards.

After installation we have 10 sq. yards of left over carpet, not including the many small strips or the piece cut from the entryway. We have an entryway that measures 4' X 3' so we expected one piece of large carpet left over but that should have been the only large piece of carpet waste. As you can see by the pictures included with this letter we had enough carpet left over to carpet the smallest bedroom in our house. Since installation is charged by the square yard installed we feel we were over charged for installation. We also feel we were charged for an excessive amount of carpet because of a disagreement we had with the store over a fee charged for needing to purchase under 37 sq. yards.

Our charges for installation were $252.20 and $1 was charged for each tack strip. We were charged for 38 tack strips and after witnessing the extreme waste of carpet we measured the room and calculated the number of tack strips necessary. If they were placed end to end there was only enough room for 27 strips which would mean we were overcharged by $11 + tax just for the strips. The installers were here from 12:45pm to just before 2:00pm, approximately one hour. Upon completion of installation they simply picked up their tools and left without cleaning up their mess. They left sharp staples, carpet pieces, and trash from the razor blades they used all over the floor. For $252 worth of professional installation you would expect they would at least clean up the large debris.

We would like to know if it is your policy to sell customers more carpet than they require and charge for installation of even the unused portion. They seemed to have the correct measurements for the padding that was part of the promotion. If the situation were reversed would your company accept this amount of waste.

Not necessarily a rip off

I have installed for over fifteen years. For reputable stores and know what I'm talking about.Having carpet left over is not necessarily(not always)a stores attempt to rip you off.I am sure you are aware of "Sweep"issues with carpet installation.Any rooms that are connected together, with carpet, must be installed with the sweep running the same direction throughout the home,.Meaning we cannot simply turn pieces in any matter we want,in order to make the almost always present,Dreaded,Horrible seams. No one wants to see a seam, but practically all seams show.No one wants undue seams in there home....No-one.When a job has been measured right, you absolutely should have left over carpet. Not having any, only means every little piece had to be used.Instead of having to put one or two pieces in your living room,You may have five or six.No exageration...More seams....Its because of the sweep of the carpet and is absolutely a fact.More left over----Better job.As for the tack strips. We have to double strips at different areas, in order to provide a top rate job That could lead to a discrepency in the strip numbers.Of course I dont know, without pulling the carpet up.As for the blades and lack of clean up.You guys(the carpet installers)should know better.Blades that are soo sharp you can cut your eye by looking at them left lying aroundYoull be in court before long.Guaranteed.Ive seen it more than once..Trash..TSK..TSK...I just wanted to try to provide some insight, and try to explain about the more carpet left....better job... fact.It is a fact.Thats within reason of course.Carpet Installers work hard for there money.Home owners rarely offer water,or tell you anytyhing to alleviate the tension involved.Don't hit my baseboards, don't break anything. We nail tackstrips to within an inch off your precious baseboards, tile, marble fireplaces. No one ever said"You know, just beat the heck out of everything.Break what you want.....Standing over someone that doesn,t have a lot of experience can cause more stress than anyone that hasn't been there would know.Ive seen good men make mistakes they never would have normally, because of a homeowner,on there every move.Deal with a reputable store, and you should have no problems.Do what you want...its your home...but give us a break. And any man...ANY MAN that can come into your home and do a good job, should be treated with absolute respect. You have to know soo much.I hope I have helped even a little with this situation.Thank you
