I can certainly empathise with your situation, as I would be upset to find out that a $144.00 bill turned into a $500.00 bill. I am wondering why you did not contact the store or try to contact the bank? You did have the merchandise, right? You never paid for it, right? I guess you would think if you knew that you purchased something on somebody else's dime as a loan, you would want to pay them back. What were you waiting for? Take some initiative.

any account that is fananced thru HHLD contains a clause in the contract that says that they will not accept a notice of forwarding address from the post office. the consumer is required to actaully contact HHLD and provide them with the new address. IT PAYS TO READ YOUR CONTRACT'S FINE PRINT.
as far as the balance is concerned, you owe it all and there is really nothing legally you can do other than pay it. if you offer the agency somewhere around 70% as a lump sum payment they will probably offer to accept that as a settlement. just be sure that you get it in writing first.
