There's nothing illegal about what they have done. Policy #1: The posted return policy indicates that if you are not satisfied with your purchase within 90 days you may return it for a full refund. You can return it for a full refund. As long as you meet the terms and conditions. If you had not opened or assembled the merchandise you would have been given a full refund. Policy #2: deducting 30% if the box has been opened or if the item has been assembled. You said this was on your reciept and its also available if you request their full policy. Again, not illegal. Any time you return an item that has been opened toa store it is no longer new. The store cannot sell it as new so they have to mark it down as a used item. The fee you pay is usually called a restocking fee. This is to keep the store from taking a loss because you didn't want an item after you bought it and used it. So you want retail stores to take a loss everytime you return an item you decide you don't like? Let us know what the attorney general says, but it will probably be that there have been no laws broken. As a consumer, it is your responsibility to read policies before conducting business with a retail store. I personally will not shop at IKEA because I don't find their policies acceptable. I will take my business elsewhere.
