I have been attending Kaplan University for approximately a year. I was informed that I would receive financial aid for the July term beginning 7/1/09-9/8/09 for x amount of dollars.

If I was unable to receive leftover aid that I was promised by a financial aid adviser for the term, I would have never attended that term.  I was told to give it two weeks until I received my aid. I waited the two weeks and called back and was informed that I was not going to receive any aid. I called again a short period of time later and was told that I was to receive aid for the original x amount of dollars.

I was told to give it another two weeks. This process repeated for over a month and a half. I finally spoke to a manager who said that my account was all messed up by the financial aid department. This manager then put me in contact with another manager. I spoke with this manager and she told me the exact opposite of what the other manager told me. Two days later she had confirmed what the other manager had told me.

The term has ended and I have still not received a stipend. I'm facing eviction, loss of electricity, phone, and even lost my internet for over two weeks during the term because of this. I have notified the financial aid department of this on the day the term ended on 9/8/09. I was informed that my financial aid manager would call me on Wednesday 9/9/09. I have never received a phone call. I called back 9/10/09 and was supposed to have the manager return my call. I never received a phone call. I called back today on 9/11/09 and left another voice mail. I still haven't received a phone call.

I have informed the financial aid advisers of this. I had emailed my personal financial aid officer and never received a response. I have left a voice mail for my personal financial aid officer and never received a response. I have left a couple of voice-mails for the manager of my personal financial aid officer and have not received a response.

I had requested the number for the director of financial aid and I was given a phone number that rings into the admissions office every time I call it. I can't afford this negligence anymore. Going back to school has turned out to be the worse decision I have ever made.

Its sad that someone is trying to go to school, and at the same time trying to receive educational expenses while the Financial aid officers are being told not to answer their phone lines. This is true. FAO's are told not to answer the phones, they allow everything to go to voicemail, and then they laugh while deleting the voicemails. They play contests who deletes the most voicemails. These are students, trying to get money that the federal goverment is issuing so they can focus on attending college.

Yes, some students out there only go to college to get that money from the govt, but that is their choice, and they will have to pay it back as FA money cannot be dischaged in a bankruptcy.

However, FA reps and managers at Kaplan will do anything to get those students approved so they can squeeze them out of all the money that is available to them. And now, even if they are denied alternative funding ( funding to cover any out of pocket expenses if they dont qualify for FA ) , Kaplan offers students a "guaranteed loan" , which means , regardless if they can pay it back, or have horrible credit, KU will make you sign a promissory note at 15% interest and fees to cover the tuition expenses not initially covered by the governments Financial aid.

THe worse part of the financial aid department is the amount of managers that are doing ilegal things just to hit their numbers. Because, as everyone else in the company, they have challenging numbers to hit. I understand this is a for-profit university, but it is not right to gain profit by misleading prospective stundets of their funding plans.

I can substantiate this person's claims because I am experiencing the same problems. I'm a graduate student also. I know about the procedures to obtain Federal financial Aid and the guidelines for it. First of all those are loans the individual students are soully responsible for. It is wrong also to tell a student it does not cover cost and attendance. That is what Financial Aid is primarily for. It is not just for Tuition and fees for the school. It also covers living expenses. A job is not guaranteed. A loan covers all of those expenses.

The school is suppose to take out the tuition and fees and return what is left over to the student if he/she requests it. It is up to the student to turn it down and not the school. The school can only return it if the student requests them to do so or they have to send the refund to that student within two weeks.

I am having the same problems this student is having with the school's particular finacial Aid office. I requested my financial aid which included living expenses. I also signed a promissory note. That means I'm responsible for it and not that school or Finaciqal Aid office. Nobody has the right to tell a student what they should receive legally under the Federal financial Aid Guidelines. That is why they signed a promissory note.

This response is to Josh's comment,

I think you must not understand what type of company that we are dealing with here! If you have read the complaints don't you realize that many others are having the same or similar situations with "Kaplan University," which is Being Misinformed!

When I first enrolled at Kaplan, my advisor assured me that all the classes I would be taking were accredited to NYS Dept. of Education standards, but after checking into several other Universities and writing to the NYS Dept. of Education I found out "Kaplan" my advisor lied (represents Kaplan) to me, and I would not be able to transfer the credits to any other schools in New York State, which is were I reside.

Kaplan University will tell you anything to get your money! Duping people who want an education and then leaving them holding the bag with bad credit and nightmares!

So if I were you JoshI would refrain from making any comments!

1st off, you can't rely on student loans and grants to pay your bills. Your going to online school, so there isn't any reason that you can't work at the same time. Your Stafford Loans (whatever is left over) will be sent back to the lender, and the grants will be sent to you if any is left over, however you have all your aid covered before they will send you the balance. You shouldn't count on your loans to pay your bills when you take 2 classes every 9 weeks.
