Liberty Mutual Homeowner's Insurance nightmare

I recently purchased a home. I am a first time homebuyer. Since I was new to the whole process of buying a home I didn't realize how important it is to get insurance quotes right away. As the closing day approached I was told that I must have a policy now in order to be able to close. I called a few companies including the one I have my car insurance with, Liberty Mutual.

They were the only ones responding within a timely manner with a quote. I actually didn't want to go with them because of what they did to me last year involving my car insurance with them, but that's another story.

After they called with the quote I accepted and my Rep, Steven Wyatt wrote the policy.

I was able to close on the house and Liberty Mutual was paid for the entire year for the homeowner's policy.

I thought that all was well and dismissed my bad feelings involving the experience from the car insurance policy issues with them. I thought that after the year is up I can switch to another company and have plenty of time to investigate which one I wanted.

Lo and behold Liberty Mutual in action.

No more than a month had passed and they cancelled my homeowner's policy effective Dec 5th, 2002. They took 808 Dollars and cancelled me after about a month.

Now for the big question, WHY???

I had to call repeatedly to get some answers.

From the cancellation notice it seemed as if I had filed a claim on the house in May 2001 when in reality I was living happily in an apartment.

After many calls I found out that according to Liberty Mutual's policy they will not write a homeowner's policy if a house had claims within the last three years, whether filed by me or SOMEONE ELSE.

Huh????

So now the other big question is, why did they approve the policy in the first place????

Well this is where I smell a rat.

Maybe, they would like to pull the double your money' trick that they pulled with my car insurance????

The salesguy Steven Wyatt, too busy thinking of commissions I assume, didn't or didn't fully check the CLUE report and just went ahead and wrote it. Let the chips fall where they may. It's not his problem.

I was totally shocked.

By his own admission, he made a mistake and he apologizes.

Well, I won't have my money back until next year. In the meantime I have to come up with another policy pronto or

my Mortgage Company will force insurance.

Now, how am I going to come up with another 800-900 Dollars?

I guess it's all the same to Liberty Mutual.

To them, we are all just sitting on our big stacks of money waiting for them to mess us around so we can spend more because of their mistakes.

I wouldn't be surprised that when it comes time to refund the money, there will be all kinds of fees and I'll hardly get any of it back.

As for my car insurance with them, last year in May when it was time for renewal they send me a cancellation notice. They said I had four wrecks in 2 years and put all that on the CLUE report including 2 times I used them for Roadside assistance (battery boosts due to bad battery) all this counted against me.

What they had done is, they took my Ex-Husbands wrecks with substantial claim amounts and reported them as being MY wrecks. I am the policy holder, yes, BUT they were not MY wrecks and should not have been reported as mine.

I called them immediately but was told they will absolutely NOT reconsider. I pleaded with them, saying that they made a mistake, those were not my wrecks, but they would not hear me.

I didn't even know anything about CLUE reports until I called to get insurance with another company. Because of them putting all the wrecks in my name, I was given quotes of 1300-1400 a year for bare-bones liability insurance.

My friends told me to keep calling them. I did.

Then all of a sudden they reversed their decision and said, yes it does seem that those wrecks were my Ex's and they would renew my policy BUT it would be DOUBLE what it was before. Well double was still better than 1300-1400 a year. I accepted.

In the meantime I gathered evidence that they made a mistake and disputed my CLUE report. They were pretty surprised that I KNEW something about CLUE because they had told me that this report could not be changed after the fact, never even calling it CLUE report. To me who doesn't know much about the industry it sounded as if this report couldn't be touched.

I found out about the CLUE report from one of the agents that gave me a high quote and they felt sorry for me when I told them what Liberty Mutual had done.

My advice is to stay away from this company. I realize they are all in it for the money and not to help us BUT I don't think anyone deserves this kind of bad treatment.

As a matter of fact, Elvera, we have been very active in keeping the pressure on this company. They are aware of their negative image as a result of this website. We remain committed to fighting unethical business practices. You kind of hit the nail on the head about their callousness. That is why we have a tendency to get a little crass. You can't get in the stye and expect not to get any pig sh*t on you. Thanks again for your remarks. Glad we could help. ED Magedson [email protected] badbusinessbureau.com

Well, I think Liberty Mutual must be really in a hurry to get rid of me. I was expecting them to drag out the refund processing BUT they send it to me one day after my policy cancellation became effective. I'm not sure how much this website had to do with it.

At any rate, I am glad this website exists. I have found much valuable information. Using it to help me get a mortgage and looking out for pitfalls, like switching notes at the last moment and not getting all the papers signed, things like that.

I like to say this to all the shills that regularly respond to our reports in behalf of their scheming companies:
Education does NOT equal intelligence. You guys are proving it every day with your callous remarks. That you are callous is proved by your perpetrating the criminal schemes of the companies you work for. How is THAT for reasoning ability?

BTW, I do not need spellcheck. I learned how to write while I was in school, probably 2nd and 3rd grade!

Thanks April,

Just to recap...
previous owner files claim for wind damage with another insurance company in 2001 and got 247 Dollars.

I just bought the house, never filed a claim, ever
LM cancels my policy after taking my money and then noticing this claim from the CLUE report.
They cancel my policy and make it seem that I filed the claim.

I was told by Nationwide to contact the previous owner and get documentation. I only have their address. Mail will take too long to resolve this.

The policy will terminate on Dec 5th 2002
They gave me nothing itemized, showing fees etc.
If it takes 30 days after cancellation I will get a refund in Jan 2003, but will need to have money for a new policy before Dec 5th 2002.

This policy as well as my car insurance policy was canceled by the same person, Misty Williams.
What have I ever done to her?

BTW, I was incorrect about the car policy. They canceled it this year in April not last year, but they did reverse themselves on the cancellation.

I have been through a lot the last 2 years and can't get the years straight anymore, LOL.

Thanks again April, I'll try that

I personally do not like Liberty Mutual and would never deal with them on a personal level. That being said, LM can not hold your money. They have to return it to you; in check, via mail or certified mail, with a stamped date of no later than 30 days from the cancellation of your policy. I don't remember when you said it was up. They have supply you with a discriptive letter of cancellation, and a itemization letter of any fees they deduct.

Now, you can file an appeal with LM. They will have no choice but to hear you out. You may want to bring up the fact that the previous' owners claim was for wind damage. Why? Because in most policies, this is an "Act of God," and not covered by any insurance, so why they have paid a claim for such is beyond me. Dispute the fact that You are the NEW owner and the man that took or money and sold you the policy said nothing to this affect. Send a letter to the owner of this LM and tell him/her that you will be filing a complaint with the insurance commission and with your attorney general for fraudulently selling you a policy for their benefit. Let them know everything you've said in this report. Someone will see to it this doesn't happen.

Insurance companies usually do have the "3 Year Rule." But, they usually take into consideration, the cost of the previous claim, the number of claims filed on this property, and the person filing the claim. They really shouldn't be giving you all this crap.

Good Luck, and update us on how things go.

I just got my CLUE report from Choicepoint.

There was a claim filed with American Insurance Exchange (or something like that) for wind damage on May 5th 2001 by the previous owner of the property. They got a grand total of 247 Dollars.

There are no other claims within the last three years.
Liberty Mutual cancelled my Homeowners Policy because of this claim.

I have never owned property before therefore I don't have a history of claims.

I went to Nationwide Insurance after I spoke with one of the Sales Reps who assured me that they could write a policy for me.
Well, turns out they all seems to have that "No Claims In The Last Three Years" rule, at least that's what I was told by Yvonne of Nationwide Insurance. She said that if the claim was filed by the previous owner, all I needed to do is get the previous owner to hand over the documentation of the money they got and that they used on the house.

Well, I can't even get a hold of them since they provided fake phone numbers. I guess I could camp out in front of their house and wait until they show up?

I am totally amazed at american business in the 21st century. I thought that when you pay for insurance and you then have a legitimate claim that's what insurance is for!

Oh silly me, what they really want is take your money and get rich off you.

Liberty Mutual boast 50 Billion is assets on their website. Yet, they cancel me because a claim was filed last year by the previous owner with a different Insurance Co. and they got a measly 247 Dollars.

Is this insane or what?

Liberty Mutual will hold on to the 800+ Dollars I paid until the end of the year. Then I'm sure they will have all sorts of 'Fees' so they only have to give back a small portion eventhough I was insured for one month only.
It's just a wild guess on my part!
