We purchased a French Bulldog from Lori's Pampered Pets aka Fatboys Palmetto Pugs & Bostons. At 4 months, she was diagnosed with demodectic mange, a genetic defect that the father or mother passed on that makes her vulnerable to mange mites.

She is requiring extensive treatment by a veterinarian. The bottom line is that this dog should not have been bred nor is she breedable. They were notified of this. This dog was $1800 + tax. We love & kept the dog & asked for some form of compensation (vet bills, partial refund) to no avail.

These people are apparently irresponsible. Don't trust them. I should have been suspicious as they would not let me look at their kennels when I asked to see the parents, but instead brought the mother & father out to me. (Read their web site--they don't want you to come to their kennels. They want to meet you in a public place.)

I let my emotions get away from me & did not make a good business decision. Don't let this happen to you. I have no idea when the medical bills will end up being.

Demodex

Demodex is extremely common, most dogs are carriers and in some breeds in particular, it is more common than not, which would make it normal for the breed. Due to the commonality, and nature, it is generally not covered under most purchase agreements, not cosidered a serious problem other than by those whom are unfamiliar with it, and in alot of cases will be specifically named under exclusions. It is not generally life threatening or debilitatatng unless there is an underlying problem, an immunodefiency issue, or is left without treatment in a timely manner. We need to make ourselves aware of what issues we may run into other than routine exams, shots, and spay and neuter, in general, and breed specifically. A dog may only have one breakout during puppyhood, and you may never see it again, or you may see it on a few other occasions when your pet is stressed out (this also affects our immune system :-). If it is a constant and serious problem, I would look for underlying factors and causes which may very well be covered under a purchase contract. When considering a certain breed, it would be a good idea to pull up as many purchase agreements as you can, read what the breeder's have to say, watch what is most often excluded specifically, as this can be a GREAT indicator of what health issues to expect in addition to our other homework. It will also give us an idea of how our purchase contract should read. Please ensure your veterinarian is familiar with the breed, and what is considered 'normal' for that breed (in some breeds, like frenchie's and bulldogs, it is not always a question of what health problems exist, but how severe), and any hypersensitivities they may be prone to as well, and things like that. Also, if you are not using ivomec or a similar product for treatment, you may want to consult your vet about it (and all of the above), as it is one of the least invasive, and quick working treatments I have seen. A great deal of vets whom are familiar with demodex usually start there anyways when applicable (sensitivity to these products can run in some breeds, also a high tolerance). Hopefully this is the only problem the original poster will run into, but she is a frenchie after all. *just my opinions*

Amy, I sent you several emails and asked for a copy of the medical records for the puppy. I never recieved anything from you. I have never had any problems with any of our Frenchies having the mange. We had one female one time that was fawn with a black mask that we carried to the vet verified what she had and we sold her to a pet home. We NEVER bred her. I do not breed anything that I know will throw problems like that. I am not that type of person. You came to my home you saw the parents and you played with the puppies. I am not sure why you are trying to represent me the way that you are. I asked you what you wanted me to do and you said that you didnt want to bring her back. You never mentioned breeding to me then your concern was you couldnt breed her. I would have never sold you the puppy to begin with if I would have known that your intentions were to breed. I want my puppies to go to loving pet homes. I can provide anyone with any number of references that they want and I welcome anyone to my home to see my babies and how they are raised. Call me or email me anytime. I know that there are some people that you just cant make happy but I also know that one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. I hope that if you are looking to purchase a puppy you will still give us a call because we have nothing to hide and will be glad to answer any questions that you have about this. Thanks so much.

Further research on the web reveals other websites for this breeder: "Our Pet Palace" at ourpetpalace.com & "My Small Paws" at mysmallpaws.com. Also, the remaining 2 siblings of our puppies are now being advertised for sale locally because she's going "back to school". There is no mention of these puppies being possible carriers of demodectic mange, in spite of communication from Lori indicating she intended to sell these 2 puppies with a spay/neuter contract because of their potential problems.
