A few weekends ago I receive a collection notice in the mail from a company representing the Los Angeles Times. Since I have not spoken to anyone from the LA Times nor have I received any services from them I am puzzled. This must be a scam by someone claiming to represent them. The following Monday I call the LA Times directly to set this straight.

To my surprise they claim that I had subscribed for home delivery and services had been discontinued for lack of payment. I explained that not only have I not signed up for home delivery I have not spoken with anyone from their sales department.

This was all news to me as I never received any delivery of any kind. The customer support rep. insisted it was legit because they had a credit card number on file for this order. Again, news to me as I had not been billed anything on my credit cards.

It was also strange that the subscription order had my name spelled incorrectly. Still, I am facing a collections notice for something I never authorized nor I ever received. That's quite an impresive set of corporate ethics are at work here.

I had the same thing happen to my wife...problem is...she is from Brazil and speaks very little English. Call the number to the LA office and request to speak to someone here in LA...not the phillipines. I was told that there would be no billing and that the account would be closed. We will see...
