David, I'm sorry to hear you fell victim to these bottomfeeders. However, making that payment just re-affirmed that old debt which was previously uncollectable. It reset the statute of limitations, thus created a new debt. They can now sue you for it and get assets or wage garnishment. The statute of limitations in MA is 6 years. They could not have forced you to pay, as this "debt" was not legally collectable, and they knew it! Merchant's Credit Guide Co are JUNK DEBT BUYERS. They buy these old uncollectable debts for far less than a penny on the dollar. The only thing you can fight now is the amount that they are coming after you for. They can only atempt to collect the actual amount that was owed to the original creditor. And if you have no assets and/or are only on SSi/Disability thay cannot get anything even if they do sue you. I wouldn't pay them anything else if this is the case. You might need to get a lawyer involved to fix this mess now.
