My wife called midas muffler in Port Angeles Wa. for a quote on replacing the muffler in her van. She was quated appox $180 to replace the muffler and tailpipe. The next day I drove into Port Angeles (150 miles round trip) to have the work done.

I went to the desk and gave them the information and said my wife called yesterday and was quoted $150 - $180 to have the muffler and tailpipe replaced. The man behind the counter just smiled and said it will be a while efore they can get to it. I said no problem they are in front of wallmart and I was planning to browse for a while. I then asked for the quote in writing. The guy behind the desk said "That wont be needed I should just call in about a half hour and they will tell me how much it cost. I then said I wanted it in writing because that was good practice.

The man just repeated the above line. I then demanded a written quote and he told me if I was going to be that way I should get to the back of the line so he could wait on a real customer. I then started getting loud so the other customers could hear that they was refusing to give me a written quote. And onother guy came up to the desk and told me it would cost $280 or more they couldnt tell for sure. I then repeated the request for q written quote wich they again denied. I then said take my van out of the shop Im not doing bisiness with you. I and my friend that was with me followed him into the shop to get my van and I told the guy to expect complaints. He just smiled and said we dont have to honor our phone quotes.

Midas Muffler outright lied to us to get us to drive 150 miles round trip thinking they would get me to leave my van without a quote and then jack up the price of the work done.It's my understanding that a business cannot refuse to give a written quote yet Midas Muffler did just that even when he finally told me of the higher cost they were actually going to try to hit me with.Im willing to testify in court about these practices and I believe my friend that was with me and witnessed the whole thing will as well

I wish more people would demand the service they want like in your case. There are so many people that wait until something goes wrong or takes someone word on a repair just to find out that they have been screwed. I applaud you and your insistance on getting something in writing. It saved you money and heartache. Now if everyone else would follow your lead we wouldn't see so many post on this site.
