It's a good thing I am a skeptic. I responded to an ad from a local weekly paper published in Salt Lake City, Utah, advertising work at home stuffing envelopes. It is the same national scam that has gone on for years with Robert Hancock, John Craig, Homeworkers of America, Training & AfterCare Center and MSenvelopes.

There are a host of other phony names used, with post office addresses only and the same number in Alabama to call for information. No registered, traceable fax, no e-mail address, no street address is ever used. Though I didn't fall for this scheme, what makes me angry is the lack of interest and follow-through on the part of government agencies.

I spent and hour on the phone with the US Postal Service, Consumer Fraud Division of the US Govt and other agencies charged with protecting consumers. I was shuffled from place to place, everyone telling me it was someone else's jurisdiction or responsibility. I did file an e-mail form with the US Postal Service Fraud Division. Have heard nothing back. No wonder they operate for years.

By the time the machinery of the government follows up, they have moved on. They advertise through newspaper ads, internet ads and direct mail flyers primarily, although many scams have graduated to full-blown infomercials. The old saying is true..."If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." It will take pressure from the media to initiate action from law enforcement. Just try filing a formal complaint and see if you receive speedy (or any) results.
