Angie, The basic rules that you should always apply when dealing with debt collectors/junk debt buyers. 1. NEVER call, or accept a call from a debt collector. NEVER. 2. NEVER make a payment to a debt collector prior to making a debt validation request, and recieving adequate documentation. 3. Always demand proof that they own or have legal right to collect on a debt. 4. Any communications coming out of NCO is a scam. When you made a payment on that old, most likely past SOL uncollectable account, you restarted the SOL for collections and affirmed the debt. They can now sue you and win, where before they may not have been able to. Immediately demand a full accounting of all charges and history of payments. Demand an accurate dollar figure of what they claim you owe. Communicate only in writing, and by certified mail, return reciept requested. be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records.
