At many colleges, there credit card solicitors or credit card applications stapled on various bulletin boards specifically for college students. The credit card companys (Citibank as one example at San Francisco State)markets to college students on the assumption that they will be graduating with expectations of good income producing jobs. While in college, I started my credit history with a Citibank card (19%), a Macys department store card, and a Zales jewelry store card. Since my college days, I have closed all three cards and now I have a Wachovia (800-241-7990) gold visa with prime rate for life ($98 annual fee)and a Chase platinum mastercard also with prime rate ($45). I need the prime rate because I have a high balance. Both cards give me a total available credit of $29,000 at prime rate. Start a credit history, but don't get a secured credit card and don't sign up for a card which requires over $200 just for signing up. Be very careful with your credit or you may end up in bankruptcy.
