The attached photographs are pictures of my dog after it was put in the care of Pets are Inn for a period of 5 weeks.  The dog contracted a blood infection from the injuries and later died due to the infection.

I had used Pets Are Inn services for the past 4 months for 2-3 day periods before this incident without any problems.   However, it was found that the subcontractor that was usually used was changed.  When interviewed, the subcontractor admitted that due to her age, she was unable to hold the dog and administer the provided cortisone spray to the dog’s sores.

She also admitted not providing the dog with antibiotic medications until after my plans to pick up the dog were announced.  Further investigation found the house to be fully carpeted and unairconditioned.  Average temperatures for that region in the months of June and July are in the 90s; well above comfort levels for a husky breed.

When a full refund was requested, the owner refused and provided an approximately 30% refund.  She stated a variety of excuses ranging from not administering the medication because it “looked old” to blaming the dog groomer for the dogs injuries.

The owner also reported to the Advertiser (now defunct local newspaper) that my actions to attain a refund was some sort of extortion plot and that she felt that if I could do it to her that I could do it again.   The only reference to the dog’s injuries referred were having “hot spots” and “hair falling out”.

A complaint was submitted to the Hawaii Humane Society including a variety of witness statements and photographs.  They have informed me that both owner and subcontractor have been cited for animal cruelty.

Although these events occurred at the Ewa franchise, the use of blatantly unqualified contractors makes me feel that this is an overall problem with the standards of the company as a whole.  Contact with James Pllatt and Ann Platt have resulted in letters indicating that they take no responsibility since, despite the Humane Society report,, no city or state agency was involved.  I find this response very evasive.  Under no circumstances would I ever recommend this company and would strongly advise avoiding their services.

Babs Poei is the franchise owner of the company Pets Are Inn, owned by James and Ann Platt.  She has provided the following statements in an affidavit.

  1. I never had a client named “J. Moses” or “John Moses” [referencing the falsified Consumer Comment by “J. Moses”].
  2. I denounce the defamatory emails sent under the name J. Moses or John Moses and disavow the erroneous claims that Dr. Youn stole from me and was convicted of residential burglary in Texas. [referencing the links to the Honolulu Advertiser articles by Peter Boylan].
  3. Dr. Youn and I have agreed to settle our dispute and have mutually agreed never to disparage each other in the future, including our agreement never to use each other’s name, or any pseudonym (i.e. izzy, J. Moses, etc…) referencing the other, in any online public forum, including any media outlet, website, newspaper, magazine, or any educational institution [the affidavit is a noted exception].

A notarized copy of the affidavit is attached.  I consider this matter resolved.

First I would like to say that I have used Pets are Inn when I left the island and have nothing but good things to say about the business.  They treated my labrador how I would have treated them.  The only reason I took the time to write this is because it makes me so mad that Eric Youn was caught and convicted of trying to extort this business and he continues to this day to harass the owners and has even attempted to sue all of the media outlets that covered the case.

Eric made up a ficticious lawyer and wrote a letter demanding money from Babs Poei(Owner at Pets are inn).  In this letter he threatened her with Jail time and huge fines.

(Source: honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2008/Sep/19/ln/hawaii809190359.html)

Fortunately he was caught and convicted of these crimes (source: Here ).

Furthermore i'd like to add is that recently Eric did attempt to sue the media outlets that published his story on the basis of defamation.  All of his cases have been thrown out with the exception of one.  Sorry Eric but truth is a bulletproof defense in a defamation case.

Lastly i'd like to say this isn't Erics' first brush with the law he was also convicted of residental burglary in his native Texas before flopping over to Hawaii(Source: Here).

We don't need people like you here Eric.  This is the ALOHA state.  Go back to Texas and stop trying to steal from hardworking small business owners.

The rebuttal above by the company owner has ommited that the entire case was dismissed by the judge years before the rebiuttal was posted.  Not putting your name on the rebuttal does not mean the posting cannot be tracked.  The civil suit has been filed.

I ask consumers to view the attached photographs beofe considering using this pet care service.

Sincerely,

Eric Youn

#6REBUTTAL Owner of company

Sun, May 18, 2014

This man is still very desperate to clear his name. He was a University of Hawaii professor in Sociology the back in 2008. Has been posting all kinds of complaints on this matter. He had since been booted out of the University due to his criminal record.

First of all the article on his indictment was written twice in the Honolulu Advertiser and this newspaper is NOT defunct. It's now called the Star Advertiser (a.m and p.m edition combined). I will try to find your email address to attach the article as proof to you.

Secondly, we do not have any complaint with the Hawaiian Humane Society since we opened in 1989. You're welcome to check with them. Also the Better Business in Hawaii will show you the same thing.

Thirdly, we did administer the so called medication for his dog. If he had just counted the amount of pills, he would have discovered it. As a matter of fact, the veterinarian was also deposed by our attorneys then. The dog's hot spots were just bad from the very beginning he used our services back in 2008 and he even informed us on that. The reason he complained about his dog was due to the fact that he did not want to pay for the amount of time we had the dog for 30 days and not 5 weeks like he wrote.
