We received a letter stating that we won $250,000 in a sweepstakes. We were sent a check for $4,700 and out of that we had to pay $2,700 for taxes to be sent either Western Union or Moneygram. We were told that after the taxes had been paid then the rest of the money would be fedexed to us. We never received a check.

There is no such lottery. If it hasn't happened already, the check will be returned. Your account will see a debit of 4,700 charged against it. FTC -- you can file online. phonebusters -- Canadian website to try to track these scams. local law enforcement -- police and probably AG office. There's very little chance of seeing the $2700 you gave away. There certainly is no $250,000 out there somewhere. When reporting, make sure you mention how you sent the 2700 dollars. If by check, they may trace it. If by Western Union, make sure you mention that WU did not try to stop you from giving your money away. WU KNEW you were being scammed.
