These breeders know that they are breeding a dog that has a genetic condition that resulting in our puppy having over $5,000 of medical bills and several doctors visits and they are still breeding this dog!

We contacted them when our dog got sick and told them that there might be a problem. They were not proactive about finding out what the problem was and did not respond to our emails. I had to keep emailing them and finally emailed them and told them that the parents should not be bred.

I know see that they have bred the parents again and the pups are for sale on their website.

DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM THEM!

We adopted a weimaraner puppy from Surber K9 Kennels almost two years ago and could not have had a better experience!

Our pup has been nothing but healthy and happy. Tamsyn and Ben were very professional and reassured us that if we had any problems that they COULD handle that was part of the agreement then they would.

If you are looking for a very pleasant and respectible place to adopt a pup from then definetly look into Surber K9 Kennels.

I just want to state.. for one.. I didn't see in this report any specific name of the "genetic" condition of the puppy in question. It could more likely be irresponsible ownership of the puppy after it left Surber's. Or perhaps some of all that lovely tainted dog food that has been going around. We have one of Surber's puppies. She is 1 year, 1 month, and 2 days old. We had considered the possibility of breeding her after doing research on the Weimaraner standard. I had mentioned this to my veterinarian who then informed me that she is a beautiful and "perfect weimaraner. It would be a crime NOT to breed this dog". Yes, those were her exact words. On a side note, after seeing how many weims are stuck in rescue we have decided not to breed her. We are planning, after seeing the quality of dogs coming from Surbers Kennel, to purchase another puppy in about a year. Our dog is a perfect weimaraner of perfect health and condition. Our breeder, Surbers, has been with us every step of the way. Tamsyn has actually helped me with training, behavioral, and medical advice. Our weimaraner girl got a urinary tract infection, for which I do NOT blame the breeder, but she did help me figure out that was what was wrong with her. We are still in touch, and she is still helpful. I hope that those people filing a complaint against the breeder can come to terms and take responsibility for caring for their dog rather than blaming someone else for what happened. It's very sad and I'm sorry for you. I understand completely what it's like to go through a tough situation and wanting to blame someone for it. It might make you feel better now, but how will you feel if your selfish actions destroy a perfectly respectable business? Surbers -- look for me in a year. I will be calling on you for Weimaraner number 2.

I have a Weim from the Surber's, He is about 17 months old. I have never had a health problem or any problem with my dog. He is a magnificent specimen of the Weimaraner breed, i am sorry to hear that you had a problem with your Weim, but you didn't have to go and bad mouth an honest hard working family breeder. Anytime i have ever had a question about my weim or anything the Surber's would respond very rapidly. As for anyone who is reading this that was almost put-off by one person's account of a possible genetic anomaly, I assure you that anomalies will happen, with any living thing that breeds. With that said, I highly recommend the Surber's, and i see no reason of why you wouldn't want to own one of their beautiful Weimaraners!! Thank you Surber Kennels on letting us have such an awesome friend/Weimaraner! Once i get out of Germany i will be purchasing another Weimaraner from the Surber's.

My wife and I have also purchased a Weimaraner puppy from Surber K9 Kennels. Our puppy was born in July of 2008 and is now almost 7 months old. We received her in September of 2008. We have not encountered any health issues with our puppy whatso ever. She is a joy to have. Our experience with the breeder has been nothing but great. We were kept informed about the puppies health from day 1. The breeder does have a 30 day money back guarentee. If your puppy was having problems, why did you not get your money back (if it was within 30 days)? Also, you do not even tell us what the issues were. All you say is a genetic problem which could be anything from a sever deformaty to a dog that has an ear wax problem, so how are we supposed to even know what problems you had with the puppy. Next time you file a complaint, be more descriptive about the problems you had with the merchant in question. Your report leaves your credibility.

My husband and I bought a weimaraner puppy from this kennel in September 2007, and it was an entirely positive experience. He is the picture of health, and has been called "ideal" by more than one veterinarian. I am sorry that your puppy got sick. Sometimes animals, like humans, get sick for no apprent reason. It's sad, but it happens. It is not always a genetic problem inherited from the parents.

What sort of intrest do you have in this? It seems like you're just stirring the pot. I'll try to address your concerns. Firstly, you wrote "I, too, would like to know why these breeders seem to be in constant contact with people with healthy puppies but didn't take the time to contact the one person that had a sick puppy. To not contact an owner of a puppy that had a 50/50 chance of survival is pathetic and there is no excuse for that." You will find your answer in Surberkennels post above addresed to the puppy's owner: "You say that we don't ever check on her, but you told us a few weeks ago not to contact you anymore." Secondly, you wrote "Also, was this the first time that this female and male were bred? If so, there is a good chance that there could be something wrong and the breeders need to investigate." I guess it depends on the definition of "good." It was stated that all other puppies from that litter are healthy. Therefore one puppy from a litter who has a medical condition that may or may not have a genetic link really doesn't prove that the chances are "good." Thirdly, you made the statement "If these breeders were provided with medical records from a highly respected hospital, why do they choose not to believe them? Something seems VERY fishy here." I love the use of the adjectives "highly" and "VERY" here. Do you think that helps make a point? The puppy's owners stated "We responded and told them that we could give them the name of the condition and more information about it if they wanted it (I didn't have the name with me as I typed that email to them so I couldn't write it down)." It doesn't appear that the kennel owners were given more information than the dog had a fat/vitamin malabsoption disorder (at least from the correspondance here). I'm tired of quoting you, so your next paragraph addressing the owners of healthy dogs is off base also. We are posting our experiences. As you will see, there is one upset owner and many more happy ones. The initial claim was not just about one puppy, but rather the integrity of the breeder. I read the posts above and did not read where the owners were called liars. There was one post the doubted there was a genetic link, a possibility of which the owners are aware. Also, there is more than one post above that directly shows empathy toward the puppy and its owners. The rest of your post has good information, but you use the information as slander against the kennel. I do not know if they use genetic testing. I do not know if they have spay/neuter contracts as we spay/neuter all of our pets. How could a contract like that really be enforced? Do standards exist for "ethical breeders?" How many breeders practice them? I can assure you that Surbers are more than just "nice on the surface." Rather than spouting anger and accusations, perhaps resolution to the issue would be in order. -over and out

I, too, would like to know why these breeders seem to be in constant contact with people with healthy puppies but didn't take the time to contact the one person that had a sick puppy. To not contact an owner of a puppy that had a 50/50 chance of survival is pathetic and there is no excuse for that. Also, was this the first time that this female and male were bred? If so, there is a good chance that there could be something wrong and the breeders need to investigate. If these breeders were provided with medical records from a highly respected hospital, why do they choose not to believe them? Something seems VERY fishy here. Do any of the people here that are praising the kennel have a puppy that was bred from the same parents? If not, then your comments are a moot point, really. And just because you had a good experience with a healthy puppy, none of you should be calling this owner a liar because he/she had a different experience with a sick puppy unless you know for a fact that this person is lying! Shame on you all! How would you feel if you were in this person's shoes? If you were the person that had a sick puppy and could not get answers from the breeders? If you were trying to stop someone else from having to endure this? Sounds like this could be a classic example of a backyard breeder. What separates a backyard breeder from an ethical breeder? A backyard breeder is usually not properly educated on their breed. They usually breed more than one breed of dog. They are usually nice on the surface. The dogs outwardly look cared for and healthy. But backyard breeders commonly breed a b***h everytime she comes into heat, do indiscriminate breedings and do not do genetic tests. You can't see if a b***h or a dog is gong to throw genetic defects with your naked eye, so testing is important. They typically don't enfoce spay or neuter contracts on pet quality dogs. They commonly sell dogs with full registration without spay/neuter contracts to people with little or no background in breeding dogs. What is an ethical breeder? They do not breed to sell puppies. They typically only specilize in one breed. They will sell most of their puppies on a limited registration with a spay/neuter contract. They will have show propsects available to the right person and will require co-ownership to inexperienced people. They screen potential owners carefully and keep track of where all of their puppies are. They breed for health, temperament, mental soundness, working ability, and conformation. They perform all necessary genetic tests on dogs used for breeding and will not breed a dog that has a defect. These breeders are careful about breeding for the correct temperament for a breed.

I can't really say much more in support of the kennel than has already been stated. We have purchased two dogs from the Surbers; one weim and a yorkie. They can be seen on their website as the dogs in Bristol, TN. Our experience with the Surbers has been great and we have kept in touch very well since we got Gus. We have not had any major health issues with either dog. To the owners: What is the condition? I still didn't see it stated above. I have a medical background (human, not vet) and would be happy to see if I can find information to help. Our other weim, a rescue from a local shelter, has had her own medical difficulties so I understand that part of what you're going through.

I purchased my puppy from the Surber kennel in September 2007. From Day 1, Tamsyn Surber worked with me via phone and email to ensure that all preparations were made for my puppy's arrival. The Surbers ensured that my puppy was healthy enough for air travel and continued to offer and provide support to me after my puppy's arrival. My 'baby' is now 1 1/2 years old and her only problem is that she is spoiled... a 'nurtured' behavior that I am the cause of!! I find it extremely difficult to beleive that the Surber's refused to help the owner of one of their puppies. This breeder even sent me a Holiday Card for my puppy's first Christmas!

In regard to the report of Surber K9 Kennels being irresponsible breeders, I must say that I have had extensive experience with them and have found them to be very good and reputable breeders. I own a 1 1/2 year old Weimaraner that I bought from the Surbers. She is an awesome dog with superior intellect and impeccable health. I am very pleased with the contact I've had with the breeders and their continued interest in our dog's life and well being. I am not sure which parents sired the complaintants puppy but it seems an irrelevent point unless this a continuing problem with litter mates of that pair. I understand the "genetic defect" to be that the complaintant's pup has food allergies. Granted that is "genetic,"... but not "hereditary." Anyone who is familiar with dogs, both purebred and mixed, knows that food allergies is a very common problem in dogs that is easily remedied by diet that is well catered to by today's pet food industry. I am sorry that the vets search for a cure was so costly, but the pups life doesn't seem to be in danger? I am sure that if this "condition" had involved the loss of the puppy, that the Surbers would have followed a standard contractual obligation to replace your pet, but they aren't obligated to pay your pet's vet bills once you receive it. I have an old Springer Spaniel who, because of his genetic makeup, has suffered multiple ear infections and is now deaf. Is it the breeder's responsibility to pay all of my vet bills because my dog's parents were Springer Spaniels? Dogs like people have specific health issues that come from the luck of the genetic draw. That, to me, is just a fact of life... risks and all. I hope that those considering buying a dog from the Surbers will consider the many positive experiences that others have had from them. Take a look at their website and all their "sold puppies." You will likely find that many are well pleased and would recommend Surber Kennels.

Will kennel owners pay vet bills if another puppy gets same condition

#16Consumer Comment

Wed, February 04, 2009

To the kennel owners--you say that your vet doesn't agree with the specialists doctors on this and that you will not breed the dog again if this happens a second time. So, will you pay the thousands of vet bills for someone that has become attached to a puppy and has to go through what these people went through if another one of your puppies gets this condition? Also, the owner of the sick puppy stated that you hadn't contacted them from November until they contacted you again after you were selling puppies again. Do you have a reason for this? Did you not want to check on the puppy?

Surbers are the Best!!!!!

#18Consumer Suggestion

Surberk9kennels Are The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely the best dogs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Appalachia Virginia First, I want to say, that I can't believe that someone would come on here, because of their own personal problems and blame someone else! So, I am going to defend the breeder, that has done nothing wrong. I read the recent report of this kennel and am here to inform you, that I have 2 dogs from this kennel and have since bred myself---and none of my dogs have ever had any problems! I love my dogs more than I care for most people and they are great!! I'm not stupid, I do know that dogs can have problems. But, if my dogs have a problem, I'm not going to try and ruin my breeder, just because they sold me the dog. It is our final decision, as buyers, to take any responsibility for any problems, that may occur---at a later time---after purchase from our breeders. These breeders are the most experienced breeders I have ever come in contact with and I did my homework with several local vets, that they have done business with. They reported they saw them for regular visits, and no problems seen with them, whatsoever!!!! You know, I was born with no problems at all, was perfect. But, as I have grown older, things have developed and I have several medical problems. And I have several medical bills. But, it's not my mother & father's fault. Personally, West Va., you need to suck it up and realize, that it's not the Surbers, that dog just has it's own personal problems. If it were the breeders, all their dogs would be ill, and I know for a fact that they are not!!!! The Surbers are good people-----get off their back!!! It only takes one bad apple to screw up peoples lives and it's a very sad thing, when someone has nothing better to do than try and ruin someone's livelihood. These people have small dogs too, and they all live inside with them, they are part of the family. Not many people would do that, it's hard work! They love their dogs and they are very experienced in their field. The Surbers don't deserve to be trashed for something not in their control. I know for a fact, that if that dog was sick and you took it to the vet---within a week. They would've taken it back and returned your money. They can't be held responsible for your negligence in taking your dog to the vet. or for a problem that had arisen since the purchase. I refuse to believe that W. Va. is being totally truthful, I have seen evidence myself, to prove right the opposite. THE SURBERS ARE AWESOME BREEDERS!!!!!!!!!! God forbid, that something happen to my dogs, but when it does, eventually, I will go back to the Surbers!!!!

Also, someone had mentioned in a early post that I should give out the owner of the puppy's information for anyone who got a puppy from the same parents to be able to contact them. I did ask her if I could do that, but all she said was that she had nothing good to say about us and would recommed that no one buy a puppy from us. Also, she stated that I only got in touch with a couple of people from the same litter. At that time, I was only able to get in touch with 2 of them. But, since then, I have heard from the rest of the buyers from that litter and all puppies are healthy and well. I have done research on this puppy's condition and she stated in the above e-mails that her puppy broke her leg because her bones were weak. In all the research that I have come into contact with, this is not the way the condition that she said her puppy has starts out. The first time she called and told me about her puppy breaking her leg, she said that she was playing with her other weim (who is an adult weim). I just assumed that it was rough play and that her other dog and broken the puppy's leg. When she had called me that first time about the broken leg, she asked if happened while she was here. She had had the puppy for a little while and said that she had noticed nothing. With the puppy being about 2 months old when she came to pick her up, we both knew that her leg was not broke then. She stated that she knew I was not the type of person to sell a puppy with problems and if she did have a problem, I would have told her. But, she is painting a whole new picture now.

We have apologized so many times over and over for what happened to your puppy. We are of course, dog lovers and it really breaks our hearts for her to be going through this. On the other hand, when I was notified of this website, I contact you and you stated that you had no idea what I was talking about. You say that we don't ever check on her, but you told us a few weeks ago not to contact you anymore. As you stated in your past post, the condition may be genetic, but my vet doesn't think so. When I told you that, you said not to trust my vet, but to trust yours. That is a whole lot to ask of us. We are not going to let someone downgrade us or back us into a corner when we have done nothing wrong. If the problem should happen again, you can rest assured that she will not be bred. But like someone has stated, things do happen to puppies and it doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with the parents. If someone had a child with a disability, would you tell them to never have children again? I am not going to worry about this posting anymore. As you can see, we have never had any problems and I don't understand what you are wanting to come of all this. You stated in your original posting that we knew our dog had a genetic problem, but continued to breed her. But, that is false, based on our vet and all the information I have read they can't tell 100% that it is something that is passed down. We are very proud of everything that we produce and no one can make us feel otherwise.

I am the owner of a Surber Puppy. She is the light of our lives, very healthy and happy. These wonderful and caring people are very fine breeders and I do not believe they would breed a dog with genetic problems. Although our purchase was a toy poodle, I am confident that their Weims are very healthy. I work for a veterinarian and have seen many puppies sold by irreputable breeders, the Surbers are not that kind of breeder. I have recommended their pups to many others and would purchase a puppy from them again in a NY minute!

Response from owner of sick puppy

Wed, February 04, 2009

We are the owners of the puppy in question and here is exactly what happened from our side. We had no complaints about contact with them before we bought the dog. They were great. And we know that they have told us over and over again that they have never had another incidence with breeding. But as you can see here, there is a first time for everything. And second, for the person that questioned our vet costs, we have the vet bills for over $5,000 for treatment from our local vet (just for xrays and the pin/plate surgery) and from VA Tech vet hospital and can scan them and post them. This poor puppy had 4 broken bones in her rear legs, had to have a catheter, a camera shoved down her throat and a feeding tube inserted and was in intensive care. She is on special food (over $100 a month) and will have to have injections for the rest of her life. The puppy hurt her leg while playing ("normal" playing, nothing out of the ordinary, but our other dog is an adult weim) with our other dog. We took her to the vet and it was broken. We thought that it was just a normal break but the vet was baffled because she was so young and the break was so severe. When he went to put the pin in her leg, he was even more baffled because her bones were very, very weak. I called the kennel on this day, the day of her surgery, (OCT 6) to let them know and to ask if they had ever had any other problems similar to this. They told me no. I also emailed them and told them that the vet said that this COULD BE a genetic bone issue and the vet was worried (and I saved the all emails as proof) and asked several questions about her parents and littermates (specifically weights of the littermates). A pin and plate were put in on Oct 6. We did not hear back from them and resent the email on Oct 11. I then received an email back on Oct 11 stating that they had computer problems and was told that they had not had any problems with pups before. They only provided me with info about 2 of her littermates and said that they had not gotten in touch with the owners of her other littermates. When she went back in Nov to have xrays taken, another fracture (with no associated trauma) was discovered. The vet was extremely worried and sent us to a specialist. Our options were VA Tech or Ohio State, we picked VA Tech because they could see the dog before Ohio State could. We emailed the kennel on Nov 11 and told them that she had a rare condition where she cannot absorb fats and fat soluable vitamins and that she had a 50/50 chance of survival. She was 6 months old and her weight was down to 24 pounds. We noted in this email that specialists said that in order to prevent another dog from going through this, she and her mother, since this was her first litter, should not be bred. Again, we received no response to this email. We forwarded the same email back to them on Nov 20. They responded to this email on the 20th and wished us the best and asked if the dog was still at VA Tech. We responded and told them that we could give them the name of the condition and more information about it if they wanted it (I didn't have the name with me as I typed that email to them so I couldn't write it down). They never contacted us again. When we saw in January that there were puppies from this same mother for sale on their site, we became so upset. We wrote to them and they told me that the dog had gotten pregnant in October before they knew about the puppy's condition. They also told us that they were not going to breed this same mother again. We then sent them all of the info from the specialists about the condition. Again, we realize that this is rare and seems to be the first problem that they have had with their dogs. BUT, even though there is a chance, even though it might be a slim one, that another puppy can have these same issues, it seems that this is a risk that they are willing to take by their posts on this site and their statement from their vet. (Even though they stated to us that they were not going to bred the dog and asked us if we would talk to the people that had already bought dogs from this mother from the pups that were available on their website in Dec/Jan. if they had questions). We are glad that so many people have received healthy dogs and had a good experience, but we are sadden by how they handled this issue, with not responding to us and not even calling to check and see if the dog had survived. (No contact at all from them from Nov 20 until we made contact about the puppies on their website in early January). We realize that this is a rare condition, but good breeders should take all steps to prevent someone from going through this and should care enough about their pups to respond to emails and to call and check on a very, very sick pup.

Surber Kennels is a great place to get a Weimaraner puppy. They care about their Puppys even after they are sold at their new home. My wife and I are satified with the customer service that we recived after buying our new family companion. I would recommend them to anyone and would not hesitate to purchase another.

I purchased a weimaraner puppy from Surber Kennels as well. My puppy was very healhty and has been a blessing to our family. Upon bringing her home, we had the vet check her. Even the vet commented on how well she had been cared for. My brother purchased a Boxer form a different breede at the same time. His puppy was very sick, but he loved the dog, spent the money to make her better and lives happily with her now. Sometimes things happen. I purchased a puppy from a neighbor once. Even that puppy had some problems, but lived to be 12 years old. We love our weimaraner from Surber kennels, she is the smartest dog I have ever owned, loves to learn new tricks and steals the heart of everyone she meets. I can't tell you how many times I have had my weimaraner out and people come up to ask me where I got her, comment on her beauty, how smart she is and where I got her. At the beach last summer, my husband and counted how many people came to us to ask about our dog, one day we were approached 16 times. At the end of the week 75 people had commented on this lovely dog. I would love to have another. If I do purchase another it surely will be from Surber k9 Kennels. They have done a wonderful job with raising these dogs. I am sorry the puppy has some problems, but if she is anything like mine, it will be worth giving her the shot. The blessing these dog bring with them are amazing.

I purchased a puppy from this breeder and am extremely happy with SurberK9 Kennels. My puppy is now 8 months old and she is very healthy and has been since I got her. They were very helpful to me during the entire process. They answered all my questions, gave me more than the information I would ask for, quick to respond to my calls, very accomodating to my requests. and made sure my puppy got to me safely. I would definitely recommend this breeder to anyone looking for a puppy and I plan to purchase from them again when the time comes for me to start looking for my next dog.

I purchased a Weimaraner puppy from SurberK9Kennels back in September of 2008. My puppy is now a little over six months old and is very happy and healthy. The owners of SurberK9Kennels were very responsive to all my questions prior to delivery of my puppy. I have kept in contact with the them and will continue to do so during my dog's life. I have only positive things to say about them. Dogs get sick just like people do and it doesn't mean that it is due to genetics. If I ever purchase another Weimaraner puppy again it would definitely be from SurberK9Kennels!!!!! I love my little girl!!!!!

I bought a Blue female Weim from the Surbers nearly three years ago now. She is and always has been a very healthy dog!! The vet, friends, strangers at the park always comment on how beautiful she is. I will look to the Surbers for my next Weim when the time comes. They stayed in contact with me via telephone and email while my puppy was growing up and now they contact me a few times a year asking how she is and I always send pics. It has been a great experience and I would recommend this kennel to anyone looking for such.

We purchased a weimeraner puppy from the Surbers in June, and we have had a perfectly positive experience. Our dog is healthy, and beautiful. As this is our first weimeraner, we have had several situations in which we have needed advice, and the Surbers have answered our e-mails within hours every time. They have also followed up with us to see how the dog was doing. We will definately buy another puppy from them in the future. My heart goes out to the family of the sick puppy, and I thank God that the puppy is going to be OK. However, puppies get sick sometimes, and it is not always the breeders fault, and it is not always genetic. Please don't let one persons' bad experience stop you from adding a loving puppy to your family.

Best internet search ever

I, too, have bought a puppy from the Surbers. My husband and I weren't even looking for a dog when my sister decided to do a random internet search for small dog breeders. (My husband & I lived in an apt. at the time and couldn't get a big dog.) I have grown up with Great Danes and was initially skeptical about getting a small dog. My sister took matters into her own hands and decided to make our addition to our family her mission. Upon finding the Surbers website, she immediately contacted my husband and I and informed us that she had found our perfect puppy. A few weeks later, her boyfriend and her made the 6 1/2 hour ride to southwest Va. to pick up our puppy. We felt confident in our decision even before visiting their home because of how the website was divided up into perfect sections, how it offered information about small dogs (teacups) and how the kids were already exposed to children. ( I come from a large family.) I felt they were fair on their prices and truly felt my dog was already loved by their family. Two years later, our beloved chi-poo, Hollie, is the light of our life. She is currently our only child and as another writer said, my only concern is that my husband may love her more than me! ;) In the beginning, the Surbers were extremely helpful in allaying our fears about small dogs, offering advice on everything from vet visits to dog food questions. We still try to keep in touch with them and when we buy another dog, we will definitely go back to them. Also, as another reader stated, it is impossible to know what "genetic" issues may arise from individual puppies, just like it is when having children. I also have a hard time taking a complaint seriously when it is littered with grammatical errors. Do your own research, make your own conclusions, and I hope one day you'll have a dog with such a great start as our Hollie had.

As a consumer who has purchased a puppy from the Surber K9 kennel, I would like to provide positive feedback for this company. As a breeder myself, I purchased my first male stud from this breeder and have never had an issue with any of his puppies. To date, I have never received a negative comment about any of my puppies and I keep close contact with all owners - if a genetic condition had been passed on, I would have been advised of this. In my opinion, this is a reputable breeder and should remain reputable without consumer fear of purchasing a puppy. There are too few reputable dog breeders out there - do not punish this one because one puppy out of 100's has an illness.

I purchased a Weimaranar from the Surber's and will do so again. I selected them after I reviewed and met with dozens of breeders in the Virginia region. I have read dozens of books on the breed and been educated by champion breeders. I am not a Dr or vet but I am a well informed, educated weimaraner enthusiast. First, the comment that a genetic disease can be diagnosed by one puppy of a litter is grossly overstated. Because a disease CAN be genetic, does not indicate that the disease IS genetic. For any real proof of this there would have to be extensive research done on the parents and puppies. From what I gather, this is the first case of the Surber's genetic's being questioned. Another way to determine possible genetic defects is if multiple cases of the disease have been diagnosed from the same breeding parents, again of which there are none (to my knowledge). Second, I had a mild concern about my puppy's health after I bought from the Surbers. He had a mild discoloration in his eye that turned out to be nothing but over-protective loving parent's being confused about the way a weimaraners eye's change colors. A month later it went away. I contacted the Surbers about this and their response was caring, involved and deeply concerned. They stayed in touch with me until the optical vet found nothing wrong and also ensured me that they would do whatever it takes to help. They have always responded to my emails, even over holidays. Finally, to the complainant, It sounds like this is a one time deal. If your job is to deal with nature, and thus breed hundreds of living creatures, statistically something is bound to go wrong at some point. I feel sorry for this WVA case, I wish them well and I am glad that their dog is alive and able to be apart of their lives with this disease. To a prospective buyer: The Surber's are excellent breeders, and they run a family oriented business. Their customer service is impeccably friendly and helpful. And most importantly their dogs are beautiful, friendly, healthy and of good tempermeant. They take their breeding very seriously and I caution that anyone that does not buy from them based on this one-time occurrence is making a mistake.

I purchased my blue Weimaraner, Elvis, from Surber K9 Kennels 2 1/2 years ago. He is a perfectly healthy dog, not to mention he has a WONDERFUL disposition & temperament! The Surbers were very helpful and professional when I got Elvis. They had all of his papers and family history. I've recommended several Weimaraner lovers to the Surbers because of the ease of doing business with them and also.... because these Weimaraner lovers have been around MY WEIMARANER and they loved his temperament and attitude! I would recommend people to them again. The normal vet check-ups/shots have been the extent of my Weimaraners health issues. As far as following up is concerned, I've received several emails from the Surbers wanting to know how Elvis is doing and wanting to see updated pictures of him...I've also received Christmas cards from this Kennel! I'm not sure what Vet these pet owners have taken their Weimaraner to, and I pray that their dog is healthy, but $5000 seems EXTREMELY steep for a Vet bill. Perhaps a second opinion would've been beneficial for these pet owners...

If it means anything to those who are wondering about this breeder, I did my homework on them before I got a Weim pup from them. Everything checked out fine, including the conditions where the pups were raised. My dog, purchased last April, is perfectly healthy and displays all the traits of the breed. I couldn't be happier with my Weim. Sometimes things happen. Sometimes people have the same issues when they have a child. It doesn't mean the parents are defective, only that they had an issue with a particular birth. In any case, I've had nothing good experiences with the Surber K9 folks and would certainly go back again.

My experience with the Surber's was completely different. We adopted a Yorkshire terrier from them 2 1/2 years ago and have been thrilled. She is very healthy with none of the allergies or skin problems that you often find with small terriers. Additionally, Tamsyn was available to ask training and feeding questions for many months after the adoption. She always responded to my questions promptly either by phone or email. They also check in with us by email at least once a year to see how our dog is doing. They raise these dogs in a family setting and truly care about their future health and well being. My only complaint is my husband seems to care more about our little dog than me or my children. She truly is a joy and I feel was bred with care and professionalism.

I purchased a Female Weimaraner from Surber and just recently found out she was in the litter of this affected pup. For the record, my puppy is completely fine. She is 71 pounds and about 5'10" on two feet. She has been checked by the vet and I have been told she is one of the most beautiful Weims they have ever seen. I have been asked if I will show her, and she has been trained, but I will not. She is show quality and many people have asked me for breeder information. I WOULD RECCOMED SURBER TO ANYONE. They are great in communicating and very cooperative during my buying process of my puppy. Also, she has kept in touch with me to make sure the puppy is fine. This problem is definitely not genetic, Maybe one in a million chance? Don't take this post seriously, Surber is excellent to work with, so if your lookin for a Weim, GO TO THEM!

Though you have my condolences for your poor puppy, and the injections she has to endure every month, I have to say that I believe Surber Kennels has a good reputation for breeding healthy dogs and puppies. I've recently got a puppy from them for the very first time, and they made sure to make the experience very comfortable and memorable. I've had no health issues with my puppy. I heard from two other buyers and they gave me equally outstanding reviews of surber kennels -- saying they were very happy with their new family members. Please do not judge the kennels based on this one negative post, though what happened was tragic, it cannot be blamed on the kennel and breeders -- both the parents were tested and the breeder was told there was no genetic issues at hand. I honestly believe that Surber Kennels is a wonderful place to get a puppy from. Again, I hope your weimereiner puppy has a great life ahead of her, but please don't put unnecessary blame on the breeders.

We do have both of the parents here. The parents and puppies are all vet checked and all the puppies from that litter checked out to be fine. I have since contacted all the other owners from that litter and they are all fine. This is the first problem that we have had. Our vet said that it is not a genetic condition. And all of the research that we have done on the puppy's condition stated that particular puppy should not be bred, with no mention of the parents We have apologized over and over for what the little thing is having to go through. But some people insist on down grading us no matter how hard we try or what we try to do.

For all people that are considering buying a dog from this kennel or any kennel, please ask them about the parents, the dogs' registration, and if they have had any problems with their puppies. For this kennel (and all kennels that have had problems), since they have had an issue with a puppy that someone has documented here, ask the breeders about the specific issue. Ask them for specifics and just to be safe, do not buy a puppy from the dogs that have had problems. Ask them for the name of the condition and why they didn't respond to this person about their complaints and try to avoid problems. Ask for the contact information of the person with the issue and get both sides of the story. Don't buy a puppy from someone you can't trust and that doesn't give you straight answers!

Ask for the contact information of the person with the issue and get both sides of the story. Don't buy a puppy from someone you can't trust and that doesn't give you straight answers!

Well, what is your side of the story?

Can you please tell us what happened here based on your side and the vet records? Nobody is saying anything here. And I gotta say, angry responses that give no explanation and folks that throw around the words slander and defamation always make me wonder. If you could just calmly state the events and fact from your side, it would be appreciated. The first complaint didn't actually say anything that made me think, bad breeder, out of the gate. All it really says, is there was a problem they BELIEVE to be genetic (this word is being utterly over used and taken out of context entirely too often lately), they then told you not to breed the dog anymore (which is not usually best evaluated by the average person). Not what happened, not what was wrong, not that they even provided you with the records, not what your response was, or ANYTHING. Sounds like an angry and upset person venting, and doesn't actually indicate a problem with your kennel or your breeding program in the least based on the information that was given. However, folks with little or no experience, don't always read between the lines, and take complaints about breeder's at face value. They don't know how often the 'complaint' and what the vet records say, are two TOTALLY different things. Or what issues are common, uncommon, considered 'normal' for the breed, or can be caused by factors other than 'genetics'. So, what happened? *just my opinions*

Even dogs with every health test passed with flying colors

Even the most physically sound dogs in the world could occasionally, or once, have offspring with problems. Two perfectly sound dogs could just be a bad mix of genes sometimes. You are speaking about a specific parent I believe? Which? And when you saw the others were BOTH the parents the same? Did the whole litter have the same problem? Did the others bred previously? Does it happen every time the dog is bred, or more often than not, or even half, or a quarter of the time? How much information did you give the breeder other than you had a problem and they shouldn't breed the parents anymore? Did you get a health guarantee? What did it say? Did you follow it? What was wrong with your dog?

DON'T BUY ANY PUPPY YOU CAN'T SEE AND SELECT AND INSPECT IN PERSON

#66Consumer Suggestion

Mon, January 12, 2009

You need to ask if the puppy has had its parvo, corona and rabies shots and all of the other shots and it is hard to do if you can't see the puppy and see the vet records and be able to call the vet and verify this information because PEOPLE LIE. YOU NEED TO AT LEAST CARE ABOUT THIS EXPENSIVE PUPPY ENOUGH TO WANT TO SEE AND MEET IT IN PERSON,INSPECT ITS PARENTS AND SEE THEY SO YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT SORT OF TEMPERAMENT IT IS GOING TO HAVE WHEN IT GROWS UP. IF YOU BUY A PUPPY SIGHT UNSEEN, YOU ARE AT FAULT! THIS IS NOT A DRESS OR A PAIR OF PANTS FROM THE CATALOG, THIS IS A LIVING CREATURE THAT YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF YOUR FAMILY! IT IS OFTEN TRAUMATIC FOR A PUPPY TO BE SHIPPED FOR LONG DISTANCES! SO YOU NEED TO GO AND SEE THE PUPPY AND THE CONDITIONS IT WAS RAISED IN AND PICK IT OUT YOURSELF BECAUSE IT IS JUST TOO EASY FOR UNETHICAL BREEDERS TO SEND YOU THEIR CULLS, THEIR REJECTS, THEIR SICKLY NUISANCES AND THEIR LESS THAN PUREBREDS...THAT IS IF THEY SEND YOU ANYTHING AT ALL AND DON'T JUST KEEP YOUR MONEY!
