Bottom line, I wish she could have surfed! If I had seen her I'd have
suited her up in a wetsuit, handed her a surfboard, and calmed her down plus picked the best waves to get her
hooked and we could have let all this go. Very sorry for the confusion
she experienced. Please read my understanding of the post:
"I enrolled myself and a friend in a surf class through surf Academy"
Fine, sounds solid.
"they said the class I signed up for did not exist"
Question: how does one sign up for a class that does not exist?
Well, did we cancel it and not tell her? Lets read on...
"Only my friend was signed up"
Now, I am confused. So, her friend was able to sign up and get on a roster for a class that did not exist, but not her. At least we know the class that "did not exist" was not canceled.
we offer refunds, no problem. But she is going to this class and she might get in to a class that does not exist if she can find it, with her friend who got in.
I admit directions are a challenge for a surf spot that has no address and we posted a detailed map on our site to help students. She calls wanting directions and says we told her to go to "mapblast" which I googled and that does not exist. I also don't think we had cell phones then that could have done that then but if she had a GPS in her car it would not have mattered. There was no address, hence the map on our website.
She states she found the power plant and I know we were there that day and I was teaching the only class of the day she was looking for "that did not exist" but her fiend was enrolled in. I was exactly where you'd want me to be, I think, as an owner of a surf school: not in an office giving directions to the class.
We had 50 surfboards there and students everywhere in colored jerseys. We have canopy tents with banners, yet someone she talked to said we were not there? Surf Academy was the only permitted surf school within a half mile of the jetty in front of the power plant. I feel for her confusion. I am confused as well. If we can help students like her get to class without confusion, we will be an even better surf school.
Now, it is true that I have many children and as late teens they get their hands out for money and I'd rather see them earn it first. The student's name was the name of one daughter asking me often by phone and I have others taking messages and all I got was "R&%^#" wants you to call her about money" I figured she already knew my answer!
Well, you can't win with everyone when you teach thousands to surf every summer. We do our best as a surf school. This is an administrative bungle of comedic dimensions and I sure would have loved to do for her what we do best: teach surfing. I tried to post this years ago and it did not "stick" but I think it is important to know there are two sides.
Peace and get Wet!

I am one of Mary Setterholm's five children, I also used to work for my mom at surf academy. I read the complaint, and I believe it, but I know that the company doesn't work that way. The company is not a business in the traditional sense; it is not driven by desire for monetary gain. It sounds like a screw-up, but that is not indicative of what Surf Academy and my mother stand for, or are out to accomplish.
