Two guys in a black cadillac escalade with a huge surplus of home theater equipment in the back of it flagged me down in the mall parking lot in Redding, CA. Very convincing about being "overstocked" and how they had a couple extra units they needed to sell before they returned home to their boss with extra surplus and explained how these units are worth over 2000 dollars on their website and I could afford one for insanely cheaper than that. They just kept throwing numbers at me and had me flip through their phony catalogue of products for reassurance. The two "businessmen" even followed me to my bank so I could takr out funds to purchase their overstocked product. They even told me I could resell items for substantial amount if I wanted and now I am stuck with some sort of x brand rip off sound system I can't resell without scamming someone else into this same terrible mess :(

..that this same EXACT scam still goes on. It has been going on for as long as I can remember..and all over the country. I remember this back from when I lived in NYC, and a few years ago when I lived in Florida they got a friend of mine.

He is a sucker,,I swear this guy falls for everything. He calls me to help him set it up. When I get to his house I see the box and it says almost $2000.00 retail on the label. I asked him if he got this in some parking lot where 2 guys said it was surplus from a job and they want to get rid of it or their boss will keep it. He asked me how I knew and I told him he was suckered.

He wanted it to replace his Bose system and thought it would be better since on the box it said $2000.00. So for giggles I set it up for him (which I also told him he was lucky it was not a box of sand or rocks which these scammers sometimes do as well), and it sounded terrible. We put the Bose system back and he asked me what he should do with the system, he paid over 300 bucks for it.

I told him that he either has to scam someone else and hope to recoup, or give it away since I could get a similar or better system for him legitimately for under $100.00.

So two guys come up to you in a parking lot and offer to sell you some of their "surplus".   They are so afraid that there boss will be upset that they have extra sets of $2000 speakers, that they are willing to sell them to you for $200(You didn't say what you bought them for but that is about what other people report).

Nothing in that situation raised any "Red Flags"?  Of course not because you got greedy(and that is what they rely on) thinking you were getting a good deal.

Here is a thought..what if they were stolen?  Do you think you would be able to convince a judge that you had no idea something may be up.  Because of course a judge is going to believe that buying legitimate high end speakers out of the back of a car is something that happens every day.

Personally I think you should set them up so you can be reminded that if it sounds too good to be true..it probably is.
