I received a letter on January 15, 2009 (dtd January 9, 2009) from Kingsway Financial and the Consumer's Reward Program notifying me that I had won a portion of the $480,000 of the Consumer's Lottery. My portion was $39,000. A cashier's check drawn off of National City Bank in the amount of $3,900 was enclosed to pay for the "applicable Tax."

The check paper on which the check was written appeared authentic; however, the information embossed on the check was about as fake as it comes. It was definitely NOT a professional job.

An internet search verified that Kingsway Financials exists; however, I am sure that they are NOT involved in this scheme. The number of reports of fraud out there regarding the Consumer's Reward Program is amazing! It is very fortunate that there are systems in place of people to share such information, otherwise, more people would be taken in by such scams.

In addition to the company names used in the letter, individual names of Angela Moore, Michael King and Sara Dose were included. And, oddly enough, Sara Dose's signature read Berry Cash! I think someone messed up.

I have not quite figured out what these individuals/entities would gain from individuals attempting to cash these checks except to cause chaos in the banking system and possibly individual lives, but it is a good thing that they are not very good at this, making it very obvious that that it is a scam.

The point is to get you to cash the check and wire most of it back

The scammers know that the bank will release funds before the check bounces officially. Once you wire the money back - the check bounces and YOU now owe the bank that money. They also know a lot of people will not bother to check it out and just assume the check is legit. When in fact Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes NEVER send checks to pay taxes and fees with - those are taken from legitimate winnings before any checks are cut. Federal Trade Commission Website has info on bogus check scams Giving The Bounce To Counterfeit Check Scams http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/articles/naps29.pdf
