I started working as a nanny for Nathan in January and agreed to work full-time as a nanny for his child for $20 an hour, for 40 hours a week. He asked me to join his family trip to Orlando for 1 week and to stay with them working around the clock, taking care of his daughter and attending to the household needs.
Nathan paid me close to 40% and led me to believe I would receive the rest sooner rather than later.
After the trip, while in Miami, I worked another 20 hours and was not paid. I didn’t take this as a refusal to pay because the family kept planning with me about an upcoming 3-week trip to Spain to meet family members. They went to Kansas, their formal place of residence, where they still kept their house and belongings, and I was told to keep his local Miami personal property in my place.
During this time, the family was dealing with refusal from Nathan’s former spouse and the biological mother of his daughter to let his daughter leave the country to Spain. Because of that, I was held in "standby mode," knowing we were supposed to go on a trip soon and expecting the situation to be resolved. That's why I didn’t look for another job and kept on asking repeatedly for updates, receiving vague responses, and being made to believe that everything would return to normal soon.
After waiting for 27 days and being as polite, thoughtful, and courteous as I could be, I tried to be more assertive, demanding to know what was going on, when I would be paid, and if I even still had a job. At that point, the family suddenly became aggressive, scheduling multiple times to talk with me and blaming me for interfering with their routine.
Realizing I would not be employed, I asked for the money I was owed. I prepared a full report of the hours worked, the time spent, and the payments made and not received, but I was completely ignored.
Nathan Stephan Santacruz ripped me off by not paying $1,780 for actual time worked and $2400 for lost opportunity to work.
