I called A General Sewer to have a leaking 3/8" shut off valve on supply line to toilet tank replaced. Person on the phone informed me that the initial cost for the technician would be $100.00. When the tech arrived i told him to replace the supply line as well.(which is approximately 11.inch in length. He informed me that he would have to back to the shop to get the valve & proper fittings, since my set-up was made up of various diamaters 1/2 to 3/8 etc. The total work time was roughly 1 hour. The bill came to :$326. I had a fit: He told me the valve cost $125.00, naturally, I expressed my displeasure. Shortly after he left he returned to inform me that he called the office and told them of my dissatisfaction and they advised him to take $50.00 off of the bill: great.

My gripe isn't with their tech, Dan, he was just doing his job, he was neat and did good job, didn't dally or leave a mess. But, $276.35 for 1 hrs work? Makes one reflect on that $500. toilet seat the Navy bought several years ago, doesn't it?

Thats the kind of stuff that inspired me to rid those ripoff tradesmen ( I use the term loosely. Many looked like street bums ) from my property. Specificly back in '83 my mother called a plumber to fix a constantly running toilet. All he did was replace the valve assembly with a new one that cost about 5.00 and it took him 30 minutes. This joker charged my mother 425.00. Thats '83 dollars too! After an experience or two like that I took on ALL projects myself barring any that required heavy equipment. Life became much better and cheaper removing the gougers from it. And these things are really simple. You bet those ripoff guys love stuff like your problem to fix. Its childishly simple. I aggree with Thomas. Become a DIYer.

Had a professional plumber in your home and you think you were ripped off? I use RipOffReport frequently prior to making any large purchase and being in the Plumbing & HVAC profesion my searches today brought me to Plumbing related complaints. Its amazing how most of the complaints or not for letting a disgusting dirty plumber into your homes, but instead of having a PROFESSIONAL come into your home to perform service. In the dozens of complaints I read this evening, not one commented on the appearance of the TECHNICIAN. My guess is that the technician was in a clean uniform. Being a professional commands a higer rate of salary. As a professional Plumbing and HVAC Technician, do I not deserve to live in a nice home, support my family comfortably, and drive luxury cars? I firmly believe I do and the quality of service my company produces commands it as well. I am not a owner, but just a technician. I command a salary similar to doctors and lawyers. I have more education, certification, and training than most lawyers do. I wake up at 3am to give families heat, clear their only toilet of all the waste that clogged, and crawl under homes to make repairs. My company is a flat rate company. It is designed to save the customer money and make the company money. NO COMPANY WANTS TO LOSE MONEY! When I charge $361 to rebuld all the mechanical componets of a toilet, I guarantee that toilet. I will re-appear if god forbid it leaks at 6am. My company gives the price upfront and the customer signs in writing prior to work beginning. We arrive when scheduled and GUARANTEE ALL WORK! I personally performed $450K last year in 49 weeks working an average of 60 hours per week. I am one technician out of 22. All without a single complaint. A large percentage of that revenue goes towards overhead, not compensation for employees. Picture a multi-million dollar company that pays on top of salary, $45K per employee for taxes, insurance, education, training, licensing, etc. So the next time you call a plumber, if you want to nickel and dime call the dirty, unprofessional plumber in the pennysaver. If you want a plumber who is clean, prompt, courteous, and professional expect to pay for such. No, $300 per hour is not excessive. You are insane if you think you can get a price over the phone. Get Home Depot or Lowes to come back if there is a problem. I fix THEIR PROBLEMS! $450 for only 57 minutes? It would take most homewoners an entire weekend something I can do in 10 minutes. If I could pay for more hours in a day I would. GOOD EVENING AMERICA AND GOD BLESS.

The 'Tech' (not a plumber?) traveled twice to your house: $100 trip 1 $100 trip 2 The valve is $125 (seems pricey, but what do I know) Sales tax 6% ? $100 $100 $125 $7.50 tax Total = $332.50 You got a deal! How hard would it be to DIY? The valve, some teflon tape, a wrench..... I have replaced toilet tank inlet valve assemblies (1X ea toilet) and flapper valves (2X ea toilet) on two toilets here for a total cost of $65. The chlorine kills the flappers and eventually it also kills the inlet valves. I rember in Wales UK we were installing a new very high technology gas turbine bottoming cycle power plant (60% efficiency), and the Welsh workmen would clock in, go to look at their assigned task, return to their toolboxes to select the proper tool(s) they needed, return to the job, and proceed to work..... If they needed another tool partway through the job, they would again return to their toolboxes and select the additional proper tool(s) they needed...... Their toolboxes were a bit off in another place......
