On November 18, 2008 I purchased the Aspire One computer from Acer based on the price as well as their advertisement stating:Give your kids a fun and exciting way to experience the Internet and A child's perfect first computer". I purchased the extended warranty as well. The computer worked well but I had noticed that at the right corner of the screen the color was off but just assumed is was part of the display. On January 14, 2009 I was sitting using the computer with my son when the battery signal displayed and I grabbed the charger and was attempting to plug in the laptop. The computer slipped and I grabbed it from the screen lid. I did not grab it hard but simply grabbed it quickly and lay it back on the coffee table. As I looked up from the wall where I had plugged in the computer, I saw the screen had turned colors. The screen was still shiny and clear but under the glass it looks like the colors were off as if there was a crack. I called the company that night but the office was closed so I followed up the next day. When I called in to find out where I could get my computer fixed I was told that this was an accident and it was not covered by the warranty or extended warranty I had purchased. I was upset but then asked him how much it would cost to fix it and I was told it would cost $499. Now the computer only cost $345 total to begin with and I became very upset. I asked them why they had advertised this computer as a child's computer when in fact this computer is very fragile and breaks easily. Especially something as simple as holding the screen lid. I am willing to pay a fee to fix the screen but not for more than the computer is worth. I believe this computer should be advertised differently and a warning about how fragile the screens are should be on the box and in many places on the computer's booklets etc.

I also have the AA1, I purchased about 4 months ago. I am OTR truck driver and purchased the AA1 for use exclusively in the truck while on the road. I have had it with me since the date of purchase. I have not had ANY issues with it what so ever. Even with the rough ride of my semi truck, constantly being bounced and jarred around, nothing has broke or become unstable on my AA1. The screen is still crisp and clear like it was on day one. Not only that but my AA1 has not been powered off once since I bought it. It is on and running constantly nonstop, with the ONLY exception being when it needs to restart to complete updates. I absolutely love this machine and am considering very seriously on buying another one just to have it. No complaints here! It's unfortunate that some people feel the need to rant and rave over something that was caused by their own stupidity and carelessness in the first place. They are the ones that screwed up and they wanna get angry because the company stands behind their policy and what their policy clearly states.

I, too, had the same experience with a cracked screen after three months of use --- it started out as vertical lines ove rhalf the screen, which then developed into a visible internal crack; I already had stopped using the netbook once the lines developed. I did not drop the laptop, hit it, slammed the lid, or did anything else that I feel could have damaged it. Just closed it one night and opened the next morning. Acer doe snot cover it under warranty because cracked screens are excluded from coverage (that what they say --- not what's in their written warranty information). Is there a chacne that there's something wrong with their design or their workmanship?

I have friends here at the school I attend who have Acers and they told me that they had to go through several of them because they didn't close right AND they tended to overheat AND they had to be real careful with them OR they would mess us... And even though they did all of this,colors tended to "bleed and run" on the screen. $349 is STILL $349 I DO NOT HAVE TO WASTE ON CHEAP JUNK FROM CHINA! Get a more sturdy USED laptop from a trusted dealer for what you would waste on an cheap junk from China. I am very luck to have the used computer store where I buy mine. I have bought two or three used laptops from a great store in Austin,Texas with honest techs, reasonable prices and they gave me a nice trade-in when I wanted to upgrade. In all fairness, my friends who own them tell me that IF you get a good Acer, it lasts. But I like my used computer. It came preloaded with XP-Professional and wireless connectivity capability and a HUGE memory which I had the guys max out for me. I also don't take it out of my house --not because I think it is fragile or might get broken but the public bus is not too good a place to take something as expensive as a laptop in this present economic time. I really liked the ACER I checked out in the store but I did notice it did have a tendency to overheat and I had those issues with a DELL before --lost the motherboard.

I had my Aspire One for less than a month. When I turned it on one day, the colors were bleeding from what appeared to be a cracked screen. Unlike the writer, I didn't have any incidents I could trace it to. I was more than careful with the computer, much more than any laptop I've ever owned. I called Acer and was told it sounded like it was my fault and the cost would be mine. I am going to send it for a warranty repair and see what happens and then fight it if they say I damaged it. Given the fact that this is marketed as ultra portable ("throw it in your backpack") I don't believe it is unreasonable to expect that its screen (which would seem to be LESS prone to breakage than your average laptop due to its small size) would withstand normal transportation and movement. My guess is that the LCD in this unit is too thin for the type of device it has been placed in. I also noticed that the screen does not rest flush against the keyboard when closed, creating a point inbetween the hinges in which any pressure could potentially cause problems. I'm hearing more and more about this problem online. If our cell phones and our kids DSes can withstand drops onto concrete, it does not seem unreasonable to expect a laptop screen (especially on a laptop that weighs next to nothing) to withstand minimal pressure.

You dropped the computer. It was messed up. Whose fault was that? Was it the computer company's? Maybe their kids don't need sturdy first computers like our kids do! The trick is to plug the computer in to the wall FIRST and let it build a charge and not try to run it off of the battery unless it is an emergency because computer batteries always run down at the worst times. Not all kids are maybe mature enough for such a sensitive, delicate electrical mechanism. You didn't say how old your child was. Kids can do some rather stupid things. I know I did them when I was a kid and I was almost electrocuted on a TV set when I tried to take it apart and I was old enough to have known better but I did it anyway. Kids and computers. I don't know whatever possessed them to advertise this as a KID'S TOY! YOU DROPPED IT. YOU BROKE IT. WAS THERE A WARRANTY THAT CAME WITH IT FROM THE STORE? FROM THE MANUFACTURER? YOU STILL BROKE IT. TOO BAD. BE GLAD YOUR CHILD WASN'T INJURED BY IT!
