I received a letter a couple of weeks ago from Afni stating that I owe $108.78, for a SPRINT bill. I called the company and they told me the bill was from 1999-2000 and that Sprint had been trying to contact me since then. They offered to settle for $60 which I (stupidly) agreed to. After that I got to thinking that something was wrong with this, so I did some searching online and found many others in this same situation. I called Sprint and gave them both the account number found on the collection letter for them, and my SSN. They could not find any account in my name ever. They also told me that this company Afni is not on their list of collection agencies. I also found it funny that this "debt" is not on my credit report.

Immediately I called Afni back, asked for a supervisor who told me that they would cancel the payment and I also asked that they not send me anymore letters and he said that they could do that but that ignoring it would not make it go away. I explained to him what I found out about Sprint and he said that they were liars and that they collect for them all the time.

This was earlier tonight so I'm not sure if the payment is still going to go through or not but I'm going to call the bank in the morning and find out how I can make sure no payments come through from them.

If you get a letter from Afni, it's FRAUD.

here is a simple solution to those that are worried about that pesky phone company that you never used in the first place. its called the fair credit reporting act. the law is simple on this MAKE sprint or whoever prove to you that you owe them money a contract with your signature on it if they CANNOT prove you owe the debt they, sprint, MUST remove the debt if they say " we dont have to prove it" kindly remind them of this law. then notify the 3 credit bureaus and dispute the fact with them as they are OBLIGATED to report only factual information and NOT hearsay. i have used this avenue several times already and it works like a charm. one example, 'joe cellular" claimed i owed $3000.00 i simply asked them to show me proof, a signed contract with my signature as it appears on my license, after 30 days they could not prove this fact and thus were FORCED to remove the negative.
