Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

On several occasions, I've been contacted over the phone by someone claiming to represent this fictional company.  They do the same thing each time on the initial contact: "This is X with Y.  The very instant you receive this call, I need you or your retained attorney of record to contact me at xxx-xxx-xxxx."  I can't remember the entire text of the message but if you're reading this, you've heard it and you know the general content.  There's an outstanding loan in your name, there are three charges outstanding against you, the caller is representing attorneys or the "crime enforcement division" (how do you enforce crimes, anyway?), there will be an arrest warrant out for you next Friday--always next Friday--and they'll suspend your visa, throw you in jail, revoke your Social Security number...  The goofball even tries to read you your Miranda rights!

Bottom line, it's a scam.  They've gotten your information from some other online payday loan place you've done business with or they've hacked a legitimate source to get your information.  Wonder why they have such heavy accents?  They're in another country, either India or Pakistan, and they know they're immune to US prosecution.

Points to remember:

Even though I'm not a lawyer, I can tell you that it's illegal for anyone to jail you for non-payment of a debt.  There will be no warrant for your arrest.  Your passport cannot be revoked for non-payment of a payday loan.  Your SSN can never be revoked or suspended.  If any entity in the US wants to come after you in court, you will be served with a summons; nobody will come after you out of the blue.  You will not be Mirandized until and unless you're placed under arrest, and no civilian has any business telling them to you.

Go to www.ic3.gov and report them.  Their phone number changes frequently since they're using an intenet service to spoof your caller ID and avoid being tracked, but keep up the pressure and eventually they'll quit.

But stand firm. Let your machine take the message then hit "delete."  Tell them to come and get you if they want.  Hang up on them.  Engage them in discussions of the latest happenings in the world of the Kardashians if that's what you like.  They can do nothing to you other than harass you.
