My two cents worth.. You weren't ripped off Betty. What you saw on the pump was what was left in the filler hose from the customer before you. To my knowledge, this only happens on prepaid transactions. The Bureau of Weights and Measures checks each pump at each service station annually. Hope this information proves helpful.

There is a state agency that is supposed to check this. Usually there is a sticker on the pump stating the name of the county and the Department of Weights and Measures, contact them and let them know. Also look to make sure the gallons were zeroed out before you started, if not that could be another problem If it were me, I'd just go to another gas station and forget doing business with them, especially since they took such a cavilier attitude with you.
