Just got a bill from AT&T for some $71, for as _single_, 10 minute phone call to some place called "Comoros". The alleged call was made back in Nov, but it took 5 months to get the bill out. NOTE: I do _not_ have AT&T as my long distance provider.

I called AT&T customer service and was told this was for an "internet entertainment site", that I must have initiated the call thru my computer. Funny, I have broadband cable, and my modem is not connected to the computer, so how the call was made is beyond me.

The AT&T rep finally agreed to wipe out the bill, then proceeded to try to get me to change LD service, saying that AT&T can block future such calls. I like my present LD service (Quest),

I then called Quest and asked them about it. Seems it is possible for for a (scumbag) Webv site to read your cookies and get your phone humber while you are connected to their site. If so, that seems like invasion of privacy, to say the least.

Apparently AT&T only got involved because they had the lines going out to this place Comoros. At the time of the alleged call, I had MCI as my LD provider.

I searched the Internet for "entertainment phone calls" ands "Comoros", but only came up with ads for LD calling cards for Comoros-it is somewhere in Africa, I think.

I think it is pretty scummy of anyone to read your computer and charge you for time without your express consent. AT&T may just be an "innocent bystander" in this case, but their reps should be better versed in this scam, and there should be more info on protecting yourself from it.

ATT DID THE SAME THING BUT FOR OVER $150 TO THE SOLOMEN ISLANDS THE ONLY WAY THAT THEY COULD REMOVE THE CHARGES IS TO SWITCH TO ATT. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIABLE. DON'T EVER GET THEIR INTERNET NOR ANYTHING ELSE. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS DISCONNECT YOU TELEPHONE. CALL THE PHONE COMPANY BACK UP AND SET UP NEW PHONE SERVICE WITH A BOGUS NAME SAY YOU DONT HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER SAY YOU ONLY HAVE ID PAY THE MONTH IN ADVANCE AND IF CALL THAT NUMBER AND WHAT CAN ATT DO THEY DO NOT HAVE YOUR SOCIAL BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT YOU DONT HAVE ONE THEY CAN NOT RUIN YOUR CREDIT. THEY ARE A VERY LOUSY COMPANY AND NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF LEGALLY OR SHADY. THEY PROMISED ME 1 HOUR OF FREE MINUTES EVERY MONTH BUT ENDING UP CANCELLING IT WITHOUT MY PERMISSION BECAUSE I CANCELLED SERVICE WITHIN THE MONTH. NOT PAYING THEM AND I WILL CUSS AND THREATEN THE BILL COLLECTOR IF THEY TRY TO COLLECT HELL IT SENT SOME DEADBEAT DETECTIVE FROM ROCKFORD ILLIOSS TRYING TO KNOCK AT MY DOOR HE COULD NOT GET THE RIGHT INFORMAITON SO THAT TOOK CARE OF HIM. ANTICOPORATION MAFIA IS MY NEW BREED OF INTERNET GANG AND WE WILL RISE AGAINST BS ENRON AURTHER ANDERSON AND THOSE JERKSLIKE JEFF SKILLING AND FASTOW.
