RECENT NEWS EXCERPT:

A Rocky View County man accused of renting out stolen equipment was charged with 12 criminal counts including fraud over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000 after an ongoing investigation by the Northern and Southern RCMP Auto Theft Unit and the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

Bernard Penner, 33, was taken into custody on June 25 at a rural property just east of Balzac on Range Road 293 and made his first court appearance in Calgary Provincial Court June 27. That initial hearing was held over and Penner was back in court July 3 (after press time).

Penner is accused of renting out stolen equipment including a fork lift, wood chipper, excavators, and trailers to unsuspecting consumers through ads on local buy-and-sell website Kijiji. Penner operated a company called “Calgary Landscaper” for eight to 10 years, resulting in dozens of victims.

All of the stolen equipment was taken in Alberta.

Cpl. Lindsey Anderson of the RCMP Auto Theft Unit said RCMP were alerted to Penner’s criminal activities after the owner of a piece of equipment he’d recently had stolen was spotted travelling down Highway 2 just north of Calgary and called police.

Anderson said the investigation is ongoing and they expect to recover more pieces of stolen equipment. Since beginning the investigation on June 14, RCMP have seized more than $400,000 worth of stolen vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery.

According to Anderson, Penner also faces an assault charge stemming from an incident in Calgary earlier in June involving a former female business partner with whom he had a falling out with.

Anderson said, if anyone has rented equipment from Calgary Landscaper, to call their local RCMP detachment.
