Do not, for any reason, use Bennett rental properties. I wish I had done my homework and found this site before making the mistake of renting from this individual. I hesitate to use the word person. Bennett is an old, selfish, racist who cares nothing for you or your experience in his property. I am a white male by the way, but his racism is so overt there is no way I can describe him without referring to it. He doesn't hide it at all. Well maybe if you're a black he will, but then again he probably wouldn't be talking to you. Bennett wants your money and he will scam you out of every last penny if he can. Which is quite a shame considering many of his tenants are graduate students who are already struggling to get by. Meanwhile this piece of s**t already has a ton of money and a huge house. But it's not good enough for him, he has to take yours too.
On first meeting him he said, and I quote, "I don't rent to the communist Chinese anymore." He went on about the "communist Chinese" for about 10 minutes, not once saying Chinese without the word communist preceding it. He is clearly a delusional paranoid moron living in the past. I put it aside though because the location was right on campus and I didn't have a car at the time.
So what about the apartment. Firstly, his apartments are severely overpriced. There were others which were identical on the same street going for about 3/4 the price. Secondly the utility bills were ridiculous. I have moved and am now paying half as much (literally), without changing my habits at all. He does not care for the property at all. He "has a black guy" (his words) that is supposed to come and take care of the lawn. He came 1 time in the year I was stuck in this hell hole. If you report problems, he will ignore you as long as possible.
Upon leaving he stole our deposit, claiming that we didn't clean at all. Complete bullshit, we spent the whole day cleaning and left the house cleaner than it was when we got it. When we moved in there was a lot of dust and dead flies in the windows etc.. We left it cleaner, but according to him he had to hire a maid for 20 hours (!!!) to clean the place up, which took up the majority of our deposit. Furthermore he didn't like the CFL bulbs we left behind, so he charged us for all new bulbs throughout the apartment, at a ridiculous markup of course. Nevermind that when we moved in half the bulbs in the place were missing. He charged us for parts of the apartment that were broken when we moved in. There were other ripoffs on his list, but it's been so long now that I forget the rest. He actually expected us to pay more on top of the deposit he stole. LOL!
But I'm still angry about this, no matter how much time has passed. I just couldn't believe what a scumbag this guy is. We put up with his laziness and apathy torwards us for a whole year, never complaining, and this is how he repays us, by stealing $800 for no good reason. And we are just poor graduate students struggling to get by on our university stipend. It's such a shame people like this exist with no conscience. I guess this is the attitude of a "businessman" these days. It's sad.
