I purchased the DVD, "Jesus of Nazareth" in a two-disc set from BestBuy 03/04/06. I took it home, opened it ONLY to discover one of the discs was missing! I went back to BestBuy with the receipt abd the original packaging. I was told I was out of LUCK! I would have to take it up with the manufacturer!

Here's MY advice....OPEN all your DVD and CD's at the checkout counter, because the policy is if you open it, it is NON returnable. Even if its EMPTY.

More about this...the DVD was supposed to be the full version, unedited on two discs...it had only one disc in the package and IT WAS edited. I reported this all to Artisan, which is a part of Lionsgate Films. NO response.

Now, I have 1/2 of a edited movie, I am out 20.00 and time. BestBuy got my money and I got NOTHING.

Over the past several days I have noticed all of the RORs on Best Buy. I honestly don't see how this company remains in business. I, for one, will NEVER set foot in Best Buy again. You can't trust ANYTHING they sell...even a DVD set! This is absolutely ridiculous! Let the buyer beware of Best Buy.

If Best Buy Does not Stand Behind their Produces, who WILL?

Hi all, I am Debra, the one who reported Best Buy in the original report. I have since contacted Best Buy with various possible solutions. Since I did buy it on my BB Credit Card, I asked for a credit. I was refused. I asked them to help me contact Lionsgate (Artisan) and they said that was my problem. Now you would think I had returned 25 other DVDs or been caught making hot DVDs or I looked like Charles Manson or something. But that is far from the truth. I have purchased many, MANY large items from them because of their GOOD return/replace policy. I bought THREE, yes three computers over 10 years from them! I have bought washers and dryers...and I am an 47 year old homemaker who just wanted Jesus of Nazareth on DVD. My credit is good with them, my reputation beyond reproach...yet, in pointing all of this out, I was told WE cannon help YOU!. I contacted the main headquarters...WE cannot do anything about this, it is POLICY. No, we know NOTHING about how to get LIONSGATE to respond to you. I have called, emailed, and written to both Best Buy and Lionsgate. NOW, it is as if I do not exist. I do not know what happened with the packaging of this DVD. Keep in mind, while the first DVD looked like it came from Lionsgate, it was EDITED in several places after it said on the box, it was the UNedited version. Something is UP with one of these companies, but which, I do not know. I am resigned to not owning JoN on DVD. I am resigned to not KNOWING exactly who is the cheat on this. One thing for sure...no MATTER who YOU think should make GOOD on this...the fact is NO ONE is stepping UP to make good on it! I still think BB stole from me, because THEY still have my money and I have NOTHING...but there is also a possibility that Lionsgate stole from THEM, or someone between the two. No way to know. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!

I agree that it was wrong of best buy 2 not have exchanged the dvd. however i disagree with Sarvesh. While it is the responsibilty of the stor to stand by their products it is impossible to check EVERY piece of merchendise to ensure that it contains a product. Espicially when these products are factory sealed.

I PURCHASE EVERYTHING ON MY CREDIT CARD..groceries, everything. I always have a receipt I can match to my statement, and usually the credit card company is fair if you file something that is out of the ordinary. I have been pleasant, businesslike and received good results.

Best Buy was wrong not to exchange the DVD

I don't agree with Clint. say you buy a DVD player from Best buy. Bring iy home & find that there was no DVD player but an empty box. If you report this to Best Buy they should provide you with a box which has a DVD player in it. Ad a consumer it is not your responsibility to open the box at the store & check out its contents. If I am paying Best Buy for a merchandise then it is Best Bouy's responsibility to provide me the product expected in exchange for the money. How can anybody defend poor customer service at Best Buy or anuty other store?

I had a similar experience when I bought an Xbox 360 game Need for Speed. The game was brand new in factory packaging. When I openned it - no disc. Shocking. I immidiately went back to Target fully expecting a fight about who stole the disc. To my surprise they exchanged it without even management approval. Their one condition, I had to open the new copy on the spot. I strongly recomend buying products are stores that have more understanding return policies where the stores have the same merchandise. For stores like Best Buy and Target or Walmart there is a huge overlap in merchandise, but the return policies and attitude of the gate keepers is about 10 fold more civilized. One person suggested that if you buy a dvd you should open it at the register to make sure it is in there. That might work, but I could see a best buy manager refusing to exchange an empty box even if you did open it on the spot. They really are that bad.

Its BAD Business to NOT stand behind your Product

Clint, You are certainly entitled to your opinion, problem is, I AM the customer and Best Buy is supposed to support ME. I am a good customer and have a good reputation with them. There are no incidents of me returning CDs or DVDs, or anything else without a warrenty. When they decided to NOT stand behind their product then THEY got my money and I got nothing. Until THEY make it good or HELP me to make it good, then, yes they stole from me. They have my money and it is making them interest DAILY. I have a worthless DVD of shoddy manufacture-ship, and reckless packing. But THEY are the seller and THEY must stand with the customer. They merely said, tough luck, hope the manufacturer can help you! How do you contact a movie manufacturer who is owned by a huge company. I emailed them, but they are ignoring me...and why not? HOW about BEST BUY, the purchasing manger, calling their distributer and demanding to know what is going on? They buy by the 1,000s. You would think BB would be more upset than I, but they are NOT.

Agree and Disagree with Clint

I totally agree with ALMOST everything that Clint said.. Where I diverge is that he doesn't think that Best Buy should have exchanged it. Not a chance of getting a refund, and if that is what you went in there requesting, that could be part of the problem. If you went in and told them "I got this, had only one disk in it.. Can you exchange it for another copy?" then they should have done that. Mistakes in packaging is not real common, but does happen. I purchased a copy of Half Life 2 from WalMart back when it came out, and two of the 4 disks were missing from it. Took it back to them, and they offered to swap it out for another copy (which they didn't have in stock) and upon finding out that they couldn't exchange it, they refunded me the purchase price. I didn't expect the refund, but I did expect the exchange. Had they even asked me to wait until they got another copy in, that would have been acceptable. A bit of a pain, but acceptable. Unless the person has a history of returning merchandise purchased, then Best Buy should have exchanged it for another copy of the same title with no questions (or at least, no third degree)

Best Buy did NOT steal from you.

Hi, Debra. I'm sorry you've had all the trouble with this DVD. Let me just start by saying that I am not now, nor have I ever been an employee of Best Buy. All retailers who sell music cd's and DVD's have VERY stringent return policies on them for several reasons. People could easily take them home, burn a copy of the disc on their computers and then return it for a full refund. So, retailers do not allow returns on opened CD's and DVD's. It's called piracy and those who have practiced it in the past have made these policies necessary today. Because of this...the only thing retailers will allow is an exchange for the exact same disc (for those who receive bad discs). In other words: Once you break that seal, it's yours to keep. In YOUR case, you were missing and entire disc out of the set when you got home. This is an issue with packing at the manufacturer. Of course, when you returned to Best Buy, they declined to return the DVD or even exchange it because it was incomplete. Unfortunately, they do not know that it wasn't YOU who took the disc out yourself to replace one that got broken by the kids or something. Of course...they said no. You need to stay on Artisan (or Lionsgate) until you get a resolution to this problem. Do not let them have your money since you didn't get what you paid for. Even if you only ask for the missing disc so you can have the entire movie. Saying that a company stole from you is a grave accusation. Best Buy cannot see whats inside the package and cannot open every single DVD to look. That would make the DVD unsaleable. They have to trust that the manufacturer put inside what's advertised on the outside. You need to retract this complaint and re-submit it on Artisan as it is THEY who have done wrong here. NOT Best Buy. Again, I'm sorry you've had so much trouble. Hopefully, you'll get a resolution quickly from Artisan and you can have what you paid for. Take care!
